What does a vehicle test engineer do?

A Vehicle Test Engineer is responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing tests on vehicles to ensure they meet safety, performance, and reliability standards. They work with various types of vehicles, such as cars, trucks, or specialty vehicles, and use both laboratory and real-world testing environments. Their role often involves collaborating with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to identify issues and recommend improvements. Vehicle Test Engineers also document results and ensure compliance with industry regulations. This position is crucial for ensuring that vehicles are safe, efficient, and ready for consumer use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vehicle test engineer?

To thrive as a Vehicle Test Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, experience with vehicle dynamics, and a relevant degree. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, automotive diagnostic tools, and software like MATLAB or CANalyzer is commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting test results and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure accurate testing, compliance with safety standards, and the successful development of reliable vehicles.

What are some common challenges faced by vehicle test engineers during the testing process?

Vehicle Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting unexpected system failures, working within tight deadlines, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Job description

About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team
The Test Engineer supports the testing of our autonomous vehicles in addition to software development and engineering activities supporting the delivery of software tools, automation, and CI/CD pipelines within our Autonomous Eco System. Responsibilities include generating and executing vehicle test plans, analyzing the resulting test data, designing strategic test progression, and supporting full-lifecycle development of proprietary software solutions for the testing and delivery of our Autonomous Eco System. This position is instrumental in improving the robustness and safety of our self-driving technology, and works closely with product, design, and engineering teams to ensure robust, safety-focused testing and delivery.
What You'll Do
Vehicle Software Testing
  • Generate and execute test plans to uncover the limitations of our systems, collecting relevant data to drive improvements.
  • Perform root cause analysis of identified defects and performance issues, and provide recommended solutions.
  • Design and deploy supplementary instrumentation and infrastructure required to capture data as defined by the test plans.
  • Analyze test data and generate reports to communicate performance issues and capability improvements over time.
  • Maintain a verification and validation report showing current performance of the vehicle-level system against system requirements.
  • Work closely with software component teams to generate quantifiable performance metrics and implement vehicle-level tests for individual system components.
  • Provide regular reports to software component and system design teams, consolidating test event results and generating detailed defect reports with supporting logs.
  • Perform on-road testing in autonomous vehicles as a detailed observer/annotator.
  • Travel domestically or internationally to support on-road vehicle testing, up to 25%.

Software Engineering
  • Execute full software development lifecycle activities using a mixture of C++ and scripting languages in a Linux development environment, using Lean-Agile methodologies.
  • Complete software assignments including design, implementation, unit testing, vehicle testing, and deployed software maintenance, following quality, build, deploy, test, safety, and process requirements and guidelines.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of issues found in testing and process automation steps.
  • Support the team in identifying daily assignments and reporting progress at daily stand-ups.
  • Support software and system-level test plans and verification strategies for ongoing feature development and bug fixes.
  • Design and implement systems responsible for data acquisition and analysis from remote vehicles in the field.
  • Ensure software updates do not regress software performance by utilizing simulation software and scenarios.
  • Bring a genuine passion for the autonomy technology product area.
What You'll Need to Succeed
Education, Licensing, and Certifications Required
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or another relevant technical field, OR
