How much do vegan jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for vegan in the United States is $31.11, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $45.43 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a vegan do?

A vegan is someone who avoids consuming or using animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, and often honey. Vegans also typically avoid products made from animals, such as leather or wool, and choose alternatives that are plant-based or synthetic. The vegan lifestyle is motivated by concerns for animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and personal health. Veganism can influence dietary choices, shopping habits, and even personal care products.

What are the qualifications to get a vegan job?

The primary qualifications for a vegan job depend on the position. Some jobs, such as working at a vegan retailer, may only require a high school diploma or GED certificate and relevant skills or experience. Other roles may involve additional training or education, such as a culinary certificate, a law education, or a bachelor's degree in a related field. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a vegan job requires strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and occasionally the ability to travel as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vegan chef, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vegan Chef, you need a strong understanding of plant-based nutrition, culinary techniques, and food safety, often supported by formal culinary training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools such as commercial kitchen equipment, recipe management software, and allergen labeling systems is important. Creativity, attention to detail, and clear communication help set exceptional vegan chefs apart. These skills ensure the delivery of delicious, safe, and innovative vegan dishes that meet diverse dietary needs.

What challenges might a chef specializing in vegan cuisine face in a professional kitchen?

Chefs who focus on vegan cuisine often encounter unique challenges, such as sourcing high-quality, fresh plant-based ingredients year-round and developing creative, satisfying dishes that appeal to a broad clientele. They may also need to educate kitchen staff on vegan cooking techniques and ingredient substitutions to ensure consistency and avoid cross-contamination with animal products. Collaboration with suppliers, menu planners, and front-of-house staff is essential to maintain high standards and meet the growing demand for vegan options.

What is the difference between Vegan vs Vegetarian?

AspectVeganVegetarian
Dietary RestrictionsExcludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, and honeyExcludes meat but may include dairy, eggs, and honey
Work EnvironmentOften involved in food service, nutrition, or advocacy roles focused on plant-based lifestylesSimilar work environments, including food service, health, and wellness sectors
Certifications & CredentialsMay include nutrition certifications, vegan lifestyle certificationsNutrition certifications, dietitian credentials
Industry UsageCommon in food industry, health, and environmental advocacyWidely used in health, diet, and food sectors

Vegan and vegetarian roles often overlap in work environment and industry, but vegans strictly avoid all animal products, while vegetarians may include dairy and eggs. Understanding these differences helps clarify job expectations and client interactions in related fields.

Job description

Sous Chef - Strings Sports Brewery

Strings is a sports brewery known for our wings, burgers, and a rotating lineup of scratch-made specials - from Gulf-to-table fish dishes and red beans and rice with sausage, to vegan-optional plates, house-made pasta and much more. We're looking for a Sous Chef to join our kitchen team and help us keep that variety going strong.

About the Role

Our specials are a huge part of what keeps guests coming back, but they take real time and skill to prep. We're looking for a Sous Chef who can learn our recipes, take ownership of prepping our specials, and help keep our kitchen running smoothly during service.

What You'll Do
  • Learn and execute our recipes for rotating specials (fish dishes, red beans and rice, vegan options, pasta dishes, and more)
  • Oversee and assist with daily prep to ensure specials are ready for service
  • Support the Executive Chef/Kitchen Manager in daily kitchen operations
  • Maintain consistency, quality, and presentation across all dishes
  • Ensure proper food safety, sanitation, and storage practices
  • Help train and guide other kitchen staff as needed
  • Manage inventory and communicate prep needs for specials
  • Step in to cover various kitchen stations during busy service as needed
What We're Looking For
  • Sous chef or strong line cook experience preferred
  • Comfortable learning and executing a wide range of cuisines and techniques (seafood, Southern/Cajun, vegan, Italian, pub fare, and much more!)
  • Strong knife skills and food prep knowledge
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure during peak hours
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Food safety certification a plus (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Passion for good food and consistency
Why Join Us

You'll have the chance to put your skills into dishes that our guests genuinely love - not just standard bar fare, but real, crafted specials that keep people talking. If you enjoy variety in the kitchen and want to make an impact on our menu, we'd love to hear from you.
