What is a VC Operating Partner?

VC Operating Partners are experienced executives who work within venture capital (VC) firms to support portfolio companies with operational expertise. Unlike traditional investors, they focus on helping startups scale by offering guidance on strategy, operations, recruiting, and growth. Their hands-on approach helps companies address challenges and seize opportunities more effectively, adding value beyond just financial investment. Operating Partners often have backgrounds in management, entrepreneurship, or specific industries relevant to the VC firm's focus.

How does a VC Operating Partner typically collaborate with portfolio companies to drive growth?

A VC Operating Partner works closely with portfolio company leadership teams, offering strategic guidance and hands-on operational support tailored to each company's needs. This often involves helping to refine business models, optimize go-to-market strategies, recruit key executives, and implement best practices in areas such as sales, marketing, and product development. The role requires balancing advisory input with actionable execution, while building strong relationships to earn the trust of founders and management teams. Collaboration is frequent and may include structured check-ins, on-site visits, and ongoing communication to ensure alignment and measurable progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VC Operating Partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VC Operating Partner, you need extensive experience in business operations, strategic management, and scaled execution, often demonstrated by a track record in C-suite roles or successful entrepreneurship. Familiarity with financial modeling, portfolio management systems, and due diligence processes, along with an understanding of industry-specific metrics, is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers by enabling strong relationships with founders and portfolio companies. These abilities are crucial for driving growth, supporting investment success, and maximizing value creation within the venture capital ecosystem.

Job description

Leading M&A at the Frontier of AI-Powered Legal Services
Building the Future of How Deals Get Done

A venture-backed legal services company is seeking a Senior Partner to lead its M&A practice. The company is reimagining how in-house and external legal teams execute transactions - using AI to deliver faster, more efficient deal work at a fraction of the traditional cost. This is an early and defining hire at a well-capitalized firm with a clear vision and an ambitious roadmap.
The Senior Partner will own the M&A practice end-to-end - leading transactions, building client relationships, and helping shape the firm's approach to AI-enabled deal work. This is not a support role. You will be a named partner driving real deals for a growing client base, with the autonomy to build the practice in your own image.
The role is based in New York City and sits at the center of the firm's leadership team.
The ideal candidate brings deep transactional experience - whether from BigLaw, in-house at an acquisitive company, or the buy-side at a fund - and a genuine appetite for building something new. You are energized by the idea of practicing law differently, comfortable operating in an early-stage environment, and ready to bring your deal experience to a platform designed to scale it.
This is a rare opportunity to be a foundational partner at a firm rewriting the rules of legal services, with meaningful equity upside and the chance to define what M&A practice looks like in the AI era.
