What is a VC Operating Partner?

VC Operating Partners are experienced executives who work within venture capital (VC) firms to support portfolio companies with operational expertise. Unlike traditional investors, they focus on helping startups scale by offering guidance on strategy, operations, recruiting, and growth. Their hands-on approach helps companies address challenges and seize opportunities more effectively, adding value beyond just financial investment. Operating Partners often have backgrounds in management, entrepreneurship, or specific industries relevant to the VC firm's focus.

How does a VC Operating Partner typically collaborate with portfolio companies to drive growth?

A VC Operating Partner works closely with portfolio company leadership teams, offering strategic guidance and hands-on operational support tailored to each company's needs. This often involves helping to refine business models, optimize go-to-market strategies, recruit key executives, and implement best practices in areas such as sales, marketing, and product development. The role requires balancing advisory input with actionable execution, while building strong relationships to earn the trust of founders and management teams. Collaboration is frequent and may include structured check-ins, on-site visits, and ongoing communication to ensure alignment and measurable progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VC Operating Partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VC Operating Partner, you need extensive experience in business operations, strategic management, and scaled execution, often demonstrated by a track record in C-suite roles or successful entrepreneurship. Familiarity with financial modeling, portfolio management systems, and due diligence processes, along with an understanding of industry-specific metrics, is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers by enabling strong relationships with founders and portfolio companies. These abilities are crucial for driving growth, supporting investment success, and maximizing value creation within the venture capital ecosystem.

Job description

About HqO
HqO is connecting real estate to the people with an asset agnostic, cross-property suite of powerful applications and services that foster best-in-class, dynamic end-user experiences. HqO's REX (Real Estate Experience) Platform assesses the health and performance of a person's experience within a physical space while providing the necessary tools for operators to manage and optimize it, all from one central location.
HqO has been trusted to power 400 million+ square feet across 700+ properties in 32 countries, and we're backed by some of the world's most prominent VC and real estate companies as we continue to grow rapidly across the world.
We're driven by our core values of LET'S GO (Learning, Excellence, Truth, Service, Goodness, Ownership) which define our culture and push us to do our best work every day. If you want to join a fast-growing, highly collaborative, and supportive team that is at the forefront of real estate transformation, we're the company for you.
About the role
We are seeking a Product Manager to join our growing Product team reporting into the Director of Product. In this role, you will own the end-to-end product strategy and execution for a core area of our consumer platform - partnering closely with Engineering, UX, and Customer Success to define, prioritize, and ship features that drive meaningful user engagement and business outcomes. You'll act as the voice of the user, bring a builder's mindset to discovery and delivery, and use AI tools as a natural part of how you work. This position will enjoy a collaborative hybrid work model, with a minimum of three days per week (Tuesday-Thursday) in our Boston, MA office.
What you'll do
Own your product area's roadmap end-to-end - from discovery and opportunity sizing through prioritization, delivery, and adoption measurement
  • Partner with Engineering and Design in a true squad model - making decisions together, not handing things off over a wall
  • Define and track key product metrics (DAU/MAU, feature adoption, NPS) and use data to guide decisions and communicate impact
  • Lead customer discovery sessions; synthesize qualitative and quantitative insights into clear, well-scoped product requirements
  • Collaborate with Sales, Customer Success, and Leadership to align roadmap priorities with customer commitments and company goals
  • Maintain up-to-date roadmap documentation and drive release communications that maximize adoption
  • Proactively use AI tools (LLMs, prototyping tools, agents) to accelerate your work and explore what's possible for our users

What you bring
The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
  • 3-5+ years of product management experience in B2B SaaS; proven track record shipping user-facing mobile or web products with measurable outcomes
  • Strong data fluency - you define metrics before you build, you're comfortable in BI tools, and you make evidence-based decisions
  • Solid instincts for user research - you've led discovery, synthesized signals from interviews and behavioral data, and can separate feature requests from real user needs
  • A genuine builder's mindset - hands-on, craft-oriented, and you push for quality even under pressure
  • Clear, direct communication - sharp PRDs, crisp stakeholder updates, and comfortable presenting to senior leadership
  • Active curiosity about AI and emerging tools - you're already experimenting with LLMs, vibe-coding, or AI-native workflows and excited to apply them to product work
  • Collaborative and proactive - you surface problems early, bring solutions, and build trust across disciplines

Pay & Benefits
The compensation range below includes base salary and bonus or on-target incentive compensation, if applicable. The range reflects HqO's reasonable, good-faith estimate of what the company expects to pay for this role at the time of posting.
Range: $150,000 - $167,500
Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as skills, experience, and qualifications. In addition to cash compensation, HqO employees are eligible for equity and comprehensive benefits.
Perks & Benefits at HqO
At HqO, we believe great work starts with great people, and supporting them inside and outside the office. Our benefits are designed to help you stay healthy, grow your career, and enjoy life along the way. We offer:
  • Comprehensive medical, dental & vision plans for you and your dependents
  • Fully paid parental leave (12 weeks), in addition to state and federal leave standards
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits for qualified travel expenses
  • Access to professional development tools, like free membership to LinkedIn Learning (thousands of expert-led courses)
  • In-Office First Culture: Employees are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • Unlimited time off to recharge

How to apply
For consideration, please submit your resume. We appreciate your interest in HqO and will be back in touch if it seems like your background and experience is a good fit!
