What is a VC Operating Partner?

VC Operating Partners are experienced executives who work within venture capital (VC) firms to support portfolio companies with operational expertise. Unlike traditional investors, they focus on helping startups scale by offering guidance on strategy, operations, recruiting, and growth. Their hands-on approach helps companies address challenges and seize opportunities more effectively, adding value beyond just financial investment. Operating Partners often have backgrounds in management, entrepreneurship, or specific industries relevant to the VC firm's focus.

How does a VC Operating Partner typically collaborate with portfolio companies to drive growth?

A VC Operating Partner works closely with portfolio company leadership teams, offering strategic guidance and hands-on operational support tailored to each company's needs. This often involves helping to refine business models, optimize go-to-market strategies, recruit key executives, and implement best practices in areas such as sales, marketing, and product development. The role requires balancing advisory input with actionable execution, while building strong relationships to earn the trust of founders and management teams. Collaboration is frequent and may include structured check-ins, on-site visits, and ongoing communication to ensure alignment and measurable progress.

To thrive as a VC Operating Partner, you need extensive experience in business operations, strategic management, and scaled execution, often demonstrated by a track record in C-suite roles or successful entrepreneurship. Familiarity with financial modeling, portfolio management systems, and due diligence processes, along with an understanding of industry-specific metrics, is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers by enabling strong relationships with founders and portfolio companies. These abilities are crucial for driving growth, supporting investment success, and maximizing value creation within the venture capital ecosystem.

Key responsibilities

  • Source new investment opportunities and represent MongoDB Ventures in meetings with founders and startup executives

  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to identify key technology and market trends, and develop market maps and theses

  • Evaluate highly technical, infrastructure software companies and lead internal processes to complete investments

Job description

MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

This role is ideal for someone who understands the intricacies of and has a strong interest in highly technical products (e.g., databases, streaming platforms). Ideally, the candidate is passionate about building a career in early-stage technology investing, with a focus on infrastructure software. While the responsibilities resemble those of an institutional investing role, our team members also gain exposure to MongoDB’s operating business, including M&A activities.

We are seeking an early-career professional who is enthusiastic about infrastructure software and artificial intelligence. While regular office attendance is not required, we prefer candidates based in San Francisco or New York City.

Responsibilities
  • Source new investment opportunities and represent MongoDB Ventures in meetings with founders and startup executives
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to identify key technology and market trends, and develop market maps and theses
  • Evaluate highly technical, infrastructure software companies (e.g., creating memos) and lead internal processes to complete investments
  • Support and develop partnership initiatives with portfolio companies
Qualifications
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay Area or New York City
  • Demonstrated interest in software development and infrastructure software
  • Holds a technical degree (e.g., Computer Science, Math), has experience as a software developer, or has worked with infrastructure software companies
  • 0–3 years of professional experience in a fast-paced, demanding environment (e.g., high-growth startup, investment banking, or consulting)
  • A love for technology and a natural ability to understand its impact on products, business models, and markets
  • An existing interest in and network around early-stage technology companies
  • A team-first, ownership mentality—each team member contributes to achieving goals, regardless of the task
Success Measures
  • Within 1 month: Develop an understanding of early-stage venture capital and MongoDB Ventures’ role in the VC ecosystem. Begin building key internal and external relationships critical to your success
  • Within 3 months: Identify a market area to focus on and begin outreach and thesis development. Continue growing your network
  • Within 6 months: Complete in-depth research on a market area (e.g., embedding models), engage with the majority of viable early-stage companies in the space, and develop a thesis identifying the key value-creation opportunities and winning characteristics for companies in the market

To drive the personal growth and business impact of our employees, we’re committed to developing a supportive and enriching culture for everyone. From employee affinity groups, to fertility assistance and a generous parental leave policy, we value our employees’ wellbeing and want to support them along every step of their professional and personal journeys.
