What jobs make $1,000,000 a year?

In the finance industry, senior venture capital (VC) associates can earn total compensation exceeding $1 million annually through base salary, bonuses, and carried interest, especially at top firms. High-level roles such as hedge fund managers, private equity partners, and successful entrepreneurs can also reach this income level, often requiring extensive experience, strong networks, and specialized skills. These roles typically involve significant responsibility, performance-based incentives, and long working hours.

How much do VC associates make?

Venture capital associates typically earn a base salary ranging from $70,000 to $150,000 annually, with total compensation often including bonuses and carried interest that can significantly increase earnings. Compensation varies based on firm size, location, experience, and performance, with some associates earning over $200,000 when including bonuses and profit sharing.

What is the 80 20 rule in VC?

In venture capital, the 80/20 rule often refers to the idea that approximately 80% of a fund's returns come from 20% of its investments. VC associates analyzing startups focus on identifying high-potential companies early, understanding that a small number of successful investments drive most of the fund's performance.

What are VC Associates?

VC Associates are professionals who work at venture capital firms, supporting investment decisions and portfolio management. Their responsibilities typically include sourcing new investment opportunities, conducting due diligence on startups, analyzing market trends, and helping manage relationships with entrepreneurs and other investors. VC Associates play a key role in evaluating business models, preparing investment memos, and assisting partners with negotiations. This is often an early- to mid-level position, offering valuable experience for those seeking a long-term career in venture capital or entrepreneurship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VC Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VC Associate, you need strong analytical abilities, financial modeling skills, and a solid understanding of startup ecosystems, often supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Excel, CRM platforms, and industry databases, as well as experience with due diligence processes, is commonly required. Excellent networking, communication, and critical thinking skills help you build relationships and identify promising investment opportunities. These skills are crucial for making informed investment decisions and contributing to the success of both the VC firm and its portfolio companies.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a VC Associate, and how do they contribute to the investment process?

As a VC Associate, your daily activities often include sourcing potential investment opportunities, conducting market and financial due diligence, preparing investment memos, and supporting partners during deal negotiations. You’ll frequently meet with startup founders, analyze industry trends, and help manage the firm’s portfolio companies by tracking their performance. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication, as you’ll collaborate closely with partners, analysts, and entrepreneurs throughout the investment lifecycle.

The Digital Workplace Experience unit (ITDX) sits within the ITS Digital Workplace Department (ITDW), which delivers end-user technology products and services to a global workforce of approximately 10,000 users across more than 100 countries. ITDX is accountable for device lifecycle management, Audio Visual and Video Conferencing (AV/VC) ecosystems, and live event production - governing the experience quality of those services through XLA frameworks and user experience measurement. Products and services span corporate PCs, printers, and mobile devices; AV/VC systems; and live production for high-profile organizational events.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Senior AV/VC Solutions Designer is responsible for the end-to-end design, standards development, and technical governance of the organization's global AV/VC estate - currently spanning approximately 1,400 rooms across more than 100 countries. With significant autonomy, this role leads the architecture of scalable, experience-driven AV/VC solutions across diverse space typologies - from huddle rooms and standard meeting rooms through divisible spaces, boardrooms, and large event venues. The incumbent ensures that AV/VC designs deliver consistent, high-quality collaboration experiences, aligned to enterprise standards, workforce needs, and technology lifecycle requirements.

SCOPE OF WORK
Senior specialist level:

Performs advanced-level technical design and architecture in AV/VC systems engineering with significant autonomy

Proposes solutions to complex, multi-site AV/VC design challenges - balancing technical standards, user experience, security, and cost considerations

Seeks common ground and negotiates technical requirements and design standards with internal stakeholders, vendors, and implementation partners for leadership approval

Provides technical guidance, mentoring, and quality assurance to junior AV/VC staff and implementation teams

Requires mastery of professional knowledge across AV/VC design disciplines to lead complex, high-impact assignments independently

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads end-to-end AV/VC system design across all room typologies - including huddle spaces, standard meeting rooms, divisible and combinable rooms, boardrooms, training facilities, and large event venues

Develops and maintains enterprise AV/VC design standards, reference architectures, and room taxonomy frameworks that account for room acoustics, furniture layouts, user workflows, and collaboration requirements

Produces detailed design documentation including system schematics, signal flow diagrams, equipment schedules, bills of materials, and as-built documentation

Designs solutions across Cisco and Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR) ecosystems - including control systems, digital signal processors (DSPs), AVoIP, display systems, cameras, microphones, and room sensors

Evaluates and recommends AV/VC hardware and software platforms aligned to enterprise lifecycle, support, and budget considerations

Incorporates occupancy detection, presence-based activation, and workspace intelligence capabilities into AV/VC designs - aligned to emerging M365 and Cisco Control Hub analytics requirements
Standards and Governance
Owns and governs enterprise AV/VC design standards - ensuring consistency, scalability, and experience quality across the global estate

Maintains and evolves the AV/VC room taxonomy - defining physical and design tier classifications across space typologies

Leads design reviews and quality assurance processes for new and retrofitted AV/VC spaces - ensuring implementations meet functional, experience, and safety requirements prior to operational handoff

Partners with the Experience Product Owner to align AV/VC design standards to XLA frameworks and DEX measurement requirements
Vendor and Implementation Oversight

Stakeholder Engagement

Engages with facilities, real estate, IT infrastructure, and security teams to integrate AV/VC design requirements into workplace planning and construction projects

Communicates AV/VC design decisions, standards updates, and project status to leadership and business stakeholders

Acts as the organization's subject matter expert on AV/VC design - providing technical guidance to project teams, business stakeholders, and senior leadership
