Job Summary
Student Media at the University of Utah seeks a student to serve as Platform Manager of Wasatch Magazine, the University of Utah's outdoor adventure magazine. This position is responsible for managing and overseeing the marketing, audience engagement, distribution and business development of the magazine to ensure its continued success and growth.
The Platform Manager reports to the Student Media Adviser and works closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the magazine's editorial team. This position oversees the following areas: print and digital distribution, content development and publishing, audience growth and engagement, and marketing and on-campus relationships.
Responsibilities
The Platform Manager will provide input on publication goals and participate in regular reviews of progress. This role assists the Editor-in-Chief and reports to the Student Media Adviser across the following areas:
Vision & Direction
- Contribute input on the overall theme, artistic quality, and strategic direction of the
magazine.
Content Development & Publishing
- Understand and assist in managing website design and functionality.
- Access digital analytics and provide regular reports to magazine leadership and team members.
- Research and coordinate all social media efforts, including training team members on how to effectively use social media to promote the magazine.
Print & Digital Distribution
- Deliver quarterly editions of Wasatch Magazine to on-campus locations.
- Refill, clean, and repair magazine stands and distribution racks.
- Develop and maintain off-campus distribution points, managing relationships with business owners and coordinating delivery from contributors
- Mail magazine copies to subscribers. Develop and maintain magazine subscription lists and processes
- Work with student leaders and staff to continuously improve distribution methods.
- Collaborate with student leaders to produce a regular email newsletter
Analysis & Research
- Learn to interpret data from Google Analytics and other digital platforms (email, social media, etc.).
- Develop and track key metrics (readership, audience engagement, etc.) to inform content planning and platform decisions
- Provide regular analytics reports to content and department leadership.
Audience Growth & Engagement
- Manage marketing opportunities for the magazine through social media, events, advertising, and other on-campus promotion.
- Generate new ideas to grow and retain audience and assist in implementing those ideas alongside magazine leadership.
- Assist with on-campus events for Student Media as needed.
Quality Control
- Regularly review both print and digital publishing to ensure content is displayed correctly - e.g., print alignment and color issues, functioning web links, correct page display.
- Note: This role does not involve editorial review; content quality is the responsibility of the appropriate content leadership (editors, etc.).
Platform Growth & Development
- Coordinate with the advertising team to develop and pursue advertising opportunities and potential advertisers.
- Identify and research new content opportunities and publishing methods, and assist in training staff to develop content for those formats (video, audio, etc.)
- Collaborate with content leadership to explore new content opportunities
- Maintain alumni lists and develop strategies to engage alumni
- Assist with Giving Days campaigns and other fundraising efforts
- Stay informed on best practices from other university media programs and apply relevant insights to improve the platform
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a current University of Utah student.
Preferences
A currently enrolled University of Utah student in good academic standing.
Genuine enthusiasm for the outdoors.
Interest in or experience with journalism, news, or media.
A valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Physically able to lift approximately 25-50 lbs. at a time.
Familiarity with Wasatch Magazine is a plus; willingness to learn the platform, its leadership, and its content.
Experience working with or managing others in a team setting.
Strong communication skills, self-motivated and efficient.
Computer proficiency and willingness to learn new programs and software.
Experience in marketing, brand management, or audience engagement or a strong willingness to develop these skills.
Major, minor, or previous coursework in business, strategic communication, management, marketing, or a related field.
