Var Sales Representative information

What is a VAR sales representative?

A VAR Sales Representative is a professional who sells products and services on behalf of a Value-Added Reseller (VAR). VARs purchase products from manufacturers, add features or services such as installation, customization, or support, and then resell the enhanced package to end customers. The sales representative’s role is to build relationships with clients, understand their needs, and recommend solutions that combine the original products with the VAR's added value. They often work closely with both vendors and clients to ensure satisfaction and drive sales growth.

How does a VAR sales representative typically collaborate with technical teams to deliver customized solutions to clients?

As a VAR (Value-Added Reseller) Sales Representative, you’ll frequently work alongside technical teams such as solution engineers or product specialists to tailor technology solutions to each client’s unique needs. This collaboration involves gathering client requirements, facilitating product demonstrations, and ensuring seamless integration of hardware, software, and services. Strong communication and coordination are key, as you’ll translate client business goals into technical specifications and oversee the proposal process to ensure all deliverables align. This teamwork not only enhances customer satisfaction but also builds long-term relationships and drives repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VAR sales representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VAR Sales Representative, you need strong sales acumen, knowledge of IT products and solutions, and often a background in business or technology. Familiarity with CRM software, sales automation tools, and vendor certification programs (such as those from Cisco, Microsoft, or Dell) is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and customer-oriented communication set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively matching client needs with value-added products and services, driving sales, and maintaining long-term business relationships.

In this role, you will own the end-to-end quote-to-order lifecycle for our NASA SEWP contract vehicle, with a strong emphasis on Cisco hardware sales and quoting.

You will be responsible for responding to federal agency requests, generating accurate and compliant quotes using Cisco Commerce Workspace (CCW), negotiating competitive pricing with OEMs and distributors, managing deal registrations, and driving task orders to closure. This is a high-impact, fast-paced role ideal for a professional with experience in federal IT procurement (VAR sales), government contract vehicles, and Cisco hardware ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cisco Quoting & Configuration: Utilize Cisco Commerce Workspace (CCW) to build accurate bills of materials (BOMs), validate configurations, and generate compliant quotes.
  • Deal Registration & OEM Collaboration: Drive Cisco deal registrations and partner with major IT distributors (e.g., TD SYNNEX, Ingram Micro, Carahsoft, Arrow) and OEMs to secure competitive pricing, special/bid pricing, and maximize margins.
  • Order Lifecycle Management: Coordinate the complete lifecycle from quotation and purchase order processing to shipment tracking, delivery confirmation, and invoicing in alignment with our finance and operations teams.

  • Contract Compliance: Ensure all quoting and sales transactions comply with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), the Trade Agreements Act (TAA), NASA SEWP contract terms, and company policies.
  • Pipeline Tracking: Maintain accurate pipeline, quote logs, and activity records in our CRM; regularly report on progress against monthly and quarterly sales/margin targets.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 2–5 years of inside sales, federal quoting, or account management experience, specifically working within a federal Value-Added Reseller (VAR) or distributor environment.
  • Cisco Ecosystem Expertise: Hands-on experience with Cisco Commerce Workspace (CCW), Cisco deal registrations, and high-volume Cisco hardware quoting is strictly required.
  • Contract Vehicle Knowledge: Working knowledge of the federal procurement lifecycle and government-wide acquisition contracts (GWACs), with direct experience in NASA SEWP strongly preferred.
  • Tools & Technology: Proficient with CRM platforms (such as HubSpot or Salesforce), MS Office (particularly Excel), and distributor procurement portals.
  • Multi-tasking & Communication: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple active quotes simultaneously under tight deadlines, paired with excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with the NASA SEWP Quote Request Tool (QRT) and catalog/CLIN submission processes.
  • Understanding of federal small business socio-economic set-asides (8(a), HUBZone, WOSB) and how to leverage them.
  • Existing relationships with federal IT procurement teams, end-users, or Cisco channel sales representatives.

Benefits & Compensation
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
  • Performance-driven commission structure / quarterly quota bonus plan.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
