What does a valve automation manager do?

A Valve Automation Manager oversees the selection, installation, integration, and maintenance of automated valve systems in industrial settings. They coordinate with engineering teams to ensure that valves function efficiently and safely as part of larger process control systems. Their responsibilities also include managing projects, overseeing technical staff, troubleshooting system issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. This role requires a deep understanding of valve technologies, automation protocols, and process optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a valve automation manager?

To thrive as a Valve Automation Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience in process automation, and a deep understanding of valve technologies, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with control systems (like PLCs and SCADA), industry standards, and certifications such as ISA or API are typically required. Strong leadership, project management, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure efficient project delivery, safety compliance, and seamless collaboration with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges valve automation managers face when overseeing complex projects?

  • Build and preserve site knowledge through documentation quality, structured handoff, and consistent coordination with site leadership.
  • Evaluate and approve material procurement recommendations necessary for the execution of work packages.
  • Conduct field walk-downs to identify and analyze corrective and preventive maintenance, modification, and surveillance activities.
  • Collaborate with work management, supply, operations, and engineering to address work package issues and provide input to enhance work package quality.
  • Define procedures, drawings, equipment, and materials for planned work packages.
  • Coordinate out-of-service notifications, plant barrier impairments, and permits.
  • Verify the adequacy and compliance of work instructions with all applicable station procedures.
