A Brief Summary of This Position

The Welding Technician Utility/Lead is responsible for supporting and optimizing robotic welding and related welding fixtures to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production. The incumbent will work primarily and closely with their supervisor and manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance and assist with various continuous improvements with welding fixtures. This position will also assist with training various team members within the department. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to perform quality inspections and troubleshoot various tasks and equipment. Additionally, the incumbent serves as a utility resource for the department, supporting the team and filling in as needed across departmental functions to help drive the success of the team and maintain production objectives. This incumbent will work in a fast paced, physically and mentally challenging environment. They must have a passion for quality and achieving goals.

Essential Functions

  • Perform standard hand-welding processes
  • Run and edit robotic welding programs
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for welding and robot automated cells
  • Assist and train as well as mentor and coach welders and operators
  • Identify abnormal processes or incorrect parts and products
  • Perform process quality inspection audits and checks using various tools including but not limited to torque wrenches, calipers and other measuring tools
  • Support team members when requests are made for updating fixtures and/or processes
  • Communicate with vendors and suppliers
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to create and update work instructions and manufacturing processes
  • Operate industrial equipment such as a forklift and straddle truck
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all operator PM's and lead the team in performing said PM's
  • Keep the lines stocked with tools, materials, and measuring devices as needed
  • Follow safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to include lean
  • Maintain shop and work areas in a clean and safe environment; including 5S methodology (sorting, straightening, shining, standardizing, and sustaining)
  • Support the team and fill in as necessary to help drive the success of the team
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate

  • Associates degree in welding or related field and 6+ years of relevant manual welding and robotic welding experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the company
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and process sheets within a professional environment
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office outlook, word, excel, powerpoint
  • Strong working knowledge of robotic programing and operation
  • Strong working knowledge of QAD or other MRP Systems
  • Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading complex prints, and standard specifications.
  • Ability to be Valmont trained and certified in operation of forklift and in straddle truck operation
  • The ability to demonstrate a solid knowledge and understanding of welding processes
  • Ability to work as a team member and communicate well
  • Must be able to maintain concentration in a busy, noisy, distracting environment
  • Must be able to adapt to changes and challenges throughout the day
  • Ability to work overtime when required for business needs

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Must be able to use CAD or other 2D/3D engineering systems
  • Currently Welder C status
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role
  • Practical hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing
  • Proven ability to train team members on various welding/robotic processes

Educational Background

Must be able to clearly understand, follow, and communicate written and verbal instructions. Must be proficient in the reading of specifications, bills of material, and simple blueprints. Must be able to perform the computer functions / transactions required by the department. Must possess the necessary knowledge to operate and diagnose certain types of production tooling, plasma and oxy/acetylene burning equipment, material handling devices (cranes, pallet movers, forklifts, etc.).

Job Training Skill Development

Must be able to satisfactorily perform all functions of this position within 90 days of starting this position.

Decision Making

This job requires the employee to make decisions that affect the quality of the products being manufactured. For example, the employee must recognize when weld quality falls below acceptable levels and take corrective action to ensure repairs are made. Must also have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and to respond to challenging circumstances.

Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms to push and pull product. The employee regularly is required to walk, talk, climb stairs, sit, and hear. The employee is occasionally required climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or bend. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional exposure to outdoor working conditions and abnormal temperatures which include heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc.
  • Works around material stacked overhead height.
  • Standing and/or working in water.
  • High noise level and interior temperature conditions while operating mobile equipment.
  • Required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
