What are VADs?

VAD stands for Ventricular Assist Device. These are mechanical pumps that support heart function and blood flow in people with weakened hearts, often used for those waiting for a heart transplant or with severe heart failure. VADs can be implanted in the chest and help either the left, right, or both heart ventricles to pump blood to the rest of the body. They are managed by a team of specialized healthcare professionals who monitor and maintain the device, ensuring patients' safety and quality of life.
