VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is a progressive health care provider in the heart of Texas. Poised as VA's second largest health care system, we serve more than 117,000 Veterans and deliver 1.4 million outpatient episodes of care each year to Veterans in 38 Texas counties and two counties in southern Oklahoma. We have about 5,000 employees and 1,700 community volunteers who are driven by the passion to serve our Veterans.

Requirements (duties include, but are not limited to)

  • Initial evaluation, emergent treatment and management of minor wound care, respiratory illness, gastrointestinal illness, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, dermatological illness, ENT, eye and urological problems.
  • Initial evaluation, emergent treatment and management of abdominal and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Initial evaluation, emergent treatment and management of cardiovascular disorders
  • Initial evaluation, emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders of psychiatric origin including depression, anxiety reactions, suicide and psychosis.
  • Initial evaluation, emergent treatment and management of emergent OB/GYN disorders such as trauma, infection and pregnancy (ectopic and intra-uterine)
  • Review all admissions to inpatient hospital care recommended by Mid-level (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) provider
  • Perform in the VAMC emergency department when safe and appropriate to do so for various procedures
  • Provide consultation with and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures so that the most expeditious and clinically appropriate work-up can be done
  • Determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate in person or by phone with the referring clinicians
  • Follow all established medication policies and procedures
  • Provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency department patients
  • Provide care consistent with the national standard of care, based on best clinical judgment, VA/VHA clinical guidelines, VA/VHA directives, pertinent VA/VHA performance measures and guidelines. 
  • 95% of the time involved in direct patient care

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience practicing Emergency medicine in a hospital as defined by 1,000 hours.
  • Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine as defined by the following: 1) Board certified by either the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM), 2) physicians eligible for regaining ABEM certification, 3) board eligible (BE) Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians as defined by ABEM’s Jan 2015 definition (within 5 years of graduating from an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited EM residency).
  • Must have and maintain a current license to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Must have and maintain a current DEA certificate.
  • Must have and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as certified by the American Heart Association (AHA).
