VCU stands for Verified Carbon Unit, which is a type of carbon credit issued by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program. VCUs represent the reduction or removal of one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) from the atmosphere. These credits are generated by projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as reforestation or renewable energy projects, and can be bought and sold to help organizations meet their carbon reduction goals. Each VCU is uniquely serialized and tracked to ensure transparency and prevent double counting.
