What is a vac?

Vac operators, also known as vacuum truck operators, are professionals who operate specialized vehicles equipped with powerful suction equipment to remove liquids, sludge, or other materials from industrial sites, sewers, or tanks. Their work is essential for cleaning and maintaining industrial facilities, oilfields, construction sites, and municipal systems. Vac operators must follow strict safety protocols and often require training or certification to handle hazardous materials. Their role helps prevent environmental contamination and ensures the proper disposal of waste.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a vacuum cleaner technician?

To thrive as a Vacuum Cleaner Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, mechanical repair skills, and usually a high school diploma or vocational training in appliance repair. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, electrical testing equipment, and manufacturer-specific repair manuals is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective customer communication help technicians distinguish themselves in this role. These skills ensure accurate diagnosis, efficient repairs, and customer satisfaction, which are critical for success in appliance service roles.

What challenges do vacuum cleaner technicians face when diagnosing and repairing equipment?

Vacuum cleaner technicians often encounter challenges such as identifying hard-to-diagnose electrical or suction issues, sourcing compatible replacement parts for different models, and managing repairs within tight timeframes. Working with a variety of brands means staying updated on the latest technologies and repair techniques. Technicians also need strong communication skills to explain technical issues and solutions to customers in an accessible way, ensuring customer satisfaction.

If you're someone who enjoys traveling, working outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and taking on new challenges, you'll fit right in with Pro-Vac's Cathodic Protection team.
Our crews travel throughout the United States helping protect critical underground infrastructure that communities rely on every day. You'll work alongside an experienced team, operate specialized vacuum truck equipment, and tackle projects in new locations across the country.
This is not a local driving position. Travel is a major part of the job, and the people who thrive here genuinely enjoy life on the road.
Why You'll Love This Opportunity

  • Competitive pay of $29-$32 per hour (DOE)
  • Travel throughout the United States
  • Paid training and career development
  • Opportunities for advancement within a growing organization
  • Employee-focused culture built on teamwork and safety
Benefits Include
  • Medical, Vision, Life, Long-Term Disability & Employee Assistance Program
  • 401(k) with Company Match (up to 4%)
  • Paid Vacation & Sick/Safe Leave
  • PPE Assistance (Safety Boots & Eyewear)
  • Ongoing training and development
  • A company committed to investing in your future
You'll Thrive Here If You...
  • Enjoy traveling and are excited to spend extended time on the road.
  • Prefer variety over doing the same job every day.
  • Take pride in operating equipment safely and professionally.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in changing environments.
  • Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Are dependable and enjoy being part of a close-knit crew.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.

Qualifications
  • Valid Class A or Class B CDL
  • Tanker and Air Brake Endorsements required
  • Previous vacuum truck, industrial services, construction, utility, or related equipment experience preferred
  • Ability to pass DOT drug screen, background check, and MVR review
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and perform physically demanding work
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, overtime, and extended travel assignments as needed
What You'll Be Doing
  • Travel to job sites throughout the United States as part of our Cathodic Protection team.
  • Safely operate vacuum trucks and specialized equipment.
  • Support corrosion prevention projects that protect critical underground infrastructure.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain clean, organized trucks and job sites.
  • Follow all DOT regulations and Pro-Vac safety standards.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service while representing Pro-Vac professionally.

Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting up to 80 pounds, operating commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Extended travel and overnight stays are a regular part of this role. Reasonable accommodations will be considered for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Equal Opportunity Employer
