What is a UX Accessibility Manager?

A UX Accessibility Manager is a professional responsible for ensuring that digital products and user experiences are accessible to people with disabilities. They oversee accessibility strategies, collaborate with design and development teams, and ensure compliance with relevant accessibility standards such as WCAG and ADA. Their work involves auditing products, providing training, and advocating for inclusive design throughout the organization. The goal is to make sure everyone, regardless of ability, can use and enjoy digital products.

How does a UX Accessibility Manager typically collaborate with design and development teams to ensure accessibility standards are met?

A UX Accessibility Manager works closely with both design and development teams by providing guidance on accessibility best practices throughout the product lifecycle. This often involves reviewing wireframes, prototypes, and code to identify potential accessibility barriers, conducting training sessions, and facilitating regular audits to ensure compliance with standards like WCAG. Collaboration is key, as the manager acts as a bridge between teams, helping to troubleshoot issues and prioritize accessibility fixes within project timelines. Frequent communication and documentation help ensure that accessibility is integrated from the start, rather than addressed as an afterthought.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX Accessibility Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Accessibility Manager, you need expertise in user experience design, accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and a background in HCI or related fields. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools, assistive technologies, and relevant certifications like CPACC or WAS are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and advocacy skills help drive inclusive design and foster cross-functional collaboration.
