In this vital role, you'll serve as the primary point of contact for utility permit applicants, ensuring utility projects move efficiently from application through approval while protecting the City's infrastructure and maintaining high standards of service.

If you enjoy working with people, solving problems, coordinating projects, and making a meaningful impact on your community, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do

As the Utility Permitting Specialist, you'll play a key role in managing utility permit reviews, coordinating inspections, and supporting daily Public Works operations. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing utility permit applications for compliance with City standards, specifications, and applicable codes.

  • Managing permit workflows using the City's permitting software, including routing reviews, documenting comments, and processing approvals.

  • Serving as the primary liaison between Public Works and utility contractors, engineers, developers, and residents.

  • Providing technical guidance and outstanding customer service regarding permit requirements and application processes.

  • Coordinating and tracking citizen service requests related to utility operations.

  • Performing field inspections to verify compliance with approved plans and City standards.

  • Documenting inspections, customer interactions, and permit activity with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Monitoring permit fees and ensuring proper processing and documentation.

  • Assisting with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and customer service improvements.

  • Preparing reports, correspondence, and operational documentation for department leadership.

  • Supporting emergency response operations, severe weather events, and participating in an after-hours on-call rotation as needed.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, technically proficient, and committed to exceptional customer service. Successful candidates will have the ability to manage multiple priorities while communicating effectively with internal departments, contractors, utility providers, and the public.

  • Valid Georgia driver's license with the ability to safely operate a City-owned vehicle.

Preferred Skills & Experience

Candidates who excel in this role will demonstrate:

  • Experience with permitting, construction, utility operations, or municipal government.

  • Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize competing deadlines.

  • Experience using permitting software and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based with regular field visits to perform inspections and verify permit compliance. The role requires occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, operation of a City-owned vehicle, and participation in emergency response activities and rotational after-hours on-call assignments.
