The City of Lincoln Department of Transportation and Utilities is seeking a skilled, motivated, and highly responsible individual to assist in the evaluation, development, and coordination of various transportation-related activities. This position offers an opportunity to positively impact the City of Lincoln and to gain progressive experience in transportation engineering.
The Department's mission is to responsibly deliver, enhance and maintain vital infrastructure and services for the good of our community. The Associate Engineer will be responsible for upholding this mission by supporting professional engineers and other technical staff engaged in traffic engineering on Transportation's Analysis, Planning and Programming (APP) Team. This includes resolving problems of advanced professional and technical nature and using current transportation/traffic engineering principles and practices to achieve specific goals and program objectives. Nature of Work/Examples of Work Performed
  • Assist in conducting various studies and analyses, to include the following:
    • Intersection control
    • Roadway safety
    • Pedestrian safety
    • Capacity
    • Crash patterns
    • Signal warrants
    • Speed, and
    • Benefit/cost.
  • Complete technical write-ups and summaries following studies and analyses.
  • Collect data related to the transportation network, to include the following:
    • Trip generations
    • Turning movements, and
    • Pedestrian activity.
  • Serve as a safety advocate, to include supporting the Safe Streets Lincoln initiative to eliminate all roadway fatalities and reduce suspected serious injuries by 60% by 2045.
  • Respond to community concerns, questions, and comments related to the transportation network; Specifically, those associated with roadway configurations, signal timing, signing, marking, and overall roadway and pedestrian safety.
  • Serve as point of contact for various groups and individuals impacted by or associated with the transportation network.
  • Communicate transportation-related information to the Public and other stakeholders.
  • Create project construction estimates.

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities & Skills/Desirable Training & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in computer science, civil engineering, or related engineering or engineering technologies field or equivalent.
  • Engineering education with primary focus in the transportation/traffic engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of roadway/intersection design, traffic studies, traffic signals, capacity analysis, signing and pavement markings, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related engineering field;
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.

Necessary Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent transportation.
  • Ability to qualify for Engineer-in-Training certification.
