Overview

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager or Senior Project Manager to lead the execution of electrical substation projects ranging from distribution to transmission voltage levels. This role is responsible for managing all phases of substation construction projects including estimating support, engineering coordination, procurement, scheduling, field execution, client relations, safety compliance, quality control, and financial performance.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience managing utility, EPC, or heavy industrial electrical infrastructure projects and be comfortable overseeing greenfield and brownfield substation construction, expansions, upgrades, and maintenance projects.

Responsibilities


  • Manage electrical substation construction projects from award through closeout

  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, forecasting, manpower planning, and overall project execution

  • Coordinate with utilities, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and field supervision

  • Lead project kickoff meetings, progress meetings, and client updates

  • Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and change orders

  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, utility standards, OSHA requirements, and safety protocols

  • Support procurement and delivery of major electrical equipment including:
  • Power transformers
  • Breakers
  • Switchgear
  • Control houses
  • Relay panels
  • Bus systems
  • Protection and control equipment

  • Coordinate outage schedules and sequencing with utility clients and operations teams

  • Manage subcontractors and self-perform crews including electrical, civil, foundations, grounding, conduit, and structural work

  • Monitor project productivity, earned value, cost controls, and financial reporting

  • Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project

  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies

  • Review and approve invoices, timesheets, purchase orders, and pay applications

  • Ensure project documentation, turnover packages, testing records, and closeout documentation are completed accurately

  • Mentor assistant project managers, project engineers, and field leadership personnel

  • Maintain strong client relationships and support business development efforts when needed

Qualifications


  • 5+ years of project management experience in electrical substation construction

  • Senior Project Manager candidates typically possess 10+ years of experience managing medium- to high-voltage utility projects

  • Experience with utility, EPC, or heavy industrial electrical infrastructure projects preferred

  • Strong understanding of:
    • Substation construction practices
    • Medium- and high-voltage systems
    • Protection and controls
    • Civil and structural scopes
    • Outage coordination
    • Commissioning processes

  • Ability to read and interpret:
  • One-line diagrams
  • IFC drawings
  • Protection and control drawings
  • Civil plans
  • Specifications

  • Experience managing projects ranging from distribution substations through transmission substations preferred

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Procore, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project

  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously

  • Valid drivers license required

  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field

  • PMP certification preferred

  • Utility client experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with energized substation environments and outage planning

  • Knowledge of NETA testing, relay commissioning, and utility standards is a plus
