What is a USPS Contract Driver?

A USPS Contract Driver is an independent contractor or employee hired by a private company to transport mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS) along designated routes. Unlike regular USPS employees, contract drivers work for companies that have been awarded USPS transportation contracts. Their primary duties include picking up, transporting, and delivering mail between post offices, processing centers, and other facilities, ensuring timely and secure mail delivery. They must follow strict USPS guidelines and schedules, and may be required to pass background checks and meet specific vehicle standards.

How much does a USPS contract pay?

USPS contract drivers typically earn between $20 and $30 per hour, depending on the region, route size, and experience. Compensation may also include bonuses or incentives based on delivery performance and hours worked, with some drivers earning around $50,000 to $70,000 annually. Contract drivers are responsible for managing their own vehicle maintenance and expenses.

How to become a contract carrier for USPS?

To become a USPS contract carrier, you must meet eligibility requirements such as having a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, and a clean driving record. You need to submit an application through USPS or a third-party contractor, pass background checks, and demonstrate the ability to handle delivery routes efficiently. Contract carriers typically operate independently and are responsible for managing their schedules and delivery equipment.

What is the difference between Usps Contract Driver vs FedEx Delivery Driver?

Work EnvironmentContracted postal routes, independent or semi-independentCompany-owned or leased vehicles, direct employment or contractor
Employer & Industry UsageUnited States Postal Service, postal deliveryFedEx Corporation, package delivery services

Both Usps Contract Drivers and FedEx Delivery Drivers require similar credentials such as a valid driver's license and background checks. Usps Contract Drivers typically operate postal routes as independent contractors, while FedEx Delivery Drivers are often employed directly by FedEx or work as contractors with company vehicles. The main difference lies in their employer and the nature of their work environment, with USPS routes focusing on postal delivery and FedEx on package delivery.

Does the USPS hire contract drivers?

The USPS hires contract drivers through third-party delivery service providers, not directly as USPS employees. These contract drivers typically operate under independent contractor agreements, often using their own vehicles and insurance, and may require a valid driver's license and background check. This arrangement allows USPS to expand delivery capacity without adding permanent staff.

Where can I find USPS contract opportunities?

USPS contract opportunities are typically listed on the official USPS Supplier Diversity or Business Opportunities website, where vendors can find solicitations and bidding information. Additionally, government procurement platforms like SAM.gov publish federal contracting opportunities, including those related to USPS contracts for drivers and logistics services.

What are some common challenges faced by USPS Contract Drivers and how can they be addressed?

USPS Contract Drivers often encounter challenges such as strict delivery schedules, navigating unfamiliar routes, and dealing with varying weather conditions. Time management and route planning are crucial for maintaining timely deliveries and meeting contractual obligations. Building good communication with USPS supervisors and staying organized with paperwork can help address these challenges. Additionally, drivers benefit from regularly maintaining their vehicles to ensure reliability throughout their routes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a USPS Contract Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a USPS Contract Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and experience with route delivery and time management. Familiarity with GPS navigation, route optimization software, and compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, strong communication, and customer service skills make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure timely and secure mail delivery, adherence to safety standards, and positive interactions with customers and USPS staff.

What is "Cash in Lieu of Benefits"?

Cash in Lieu of Benefits is a USPS contract benefit. Drivers on USPS routes who decline RTS health insurance receive an additional $5.36/hr on the first 40 USPS hours per week — paid directly on top of base pay. If you're already covered through a spouse, the VA, or another source, this puts real money back in your pocket every week.

What We Expect on the USPS Routes (Routes 1, 2, and 3)

USPS contracts are built on one thing: consistency and on-time performance. USPS pays for the reliability of our trailers being where they need to be, when they need to be there. If you're the type of driver who takes pride in running a tight, predictable schedule, these routes are built for you.

We're looking for drivers who will:

  • Run on schedule, every shift. Late arrivals impact USPS operations and the entire RTS contract.
  • Communicate immediately with Operations or the Post Office if anything threatens the schedule — traffic, weather, mechanical, anything.
  • Represent RTS professionally at every USPS facility. You are the face of the company.
  • Follow USPS yard and safety rules — vest, closed-toe shoes, visible Postal ID, 5 MPH yard speed, spotters always have right of way, chock trailers, no idling.
  • Protect chain of custody — never break a USPS seal, verify registry bags and seal numbers, lock and seal trailers before leaving.
  • Check in with the Expeditor on Duty at every stop and follow load/unload procedures.

If running on time and doing things the right way is a point of pride for you, you'll fit in here.

What We Expect on the Dedicated Shuttle (Route 4)

This is a long-standing, year-round dedicated account. It has busy days and slow days — that's the nature of the work — but the pay stays consistent because we value the same thing the customer does: a reliable driver who shows up every day, handles the freight professionally, and keeps the account running smoothly. Consistency is what makes this seat one of the best local shuttle gigs in the city.
