What is a user researcher?

User Researchers are professionals who study how people interact with products, services, or systems to help organizations create user-friendly designs. They gather and analyze data about users’ needs, behaviors, and pain points through methods like interviews, surveys, usability tests, and observation. Their insights guide product teams in making informed design decisions, ensuring products are both functional and enjoyable to use. User Researchers often collaborate closely with designers, developers, and product managers throughout the development process.

What does a user researcher do?

As a user researcher, your responsibilities are to understand the needs of an end user and collect user experience, or UX, data related to a specific product or service. To collect data, you observe and test users’ behavior as they interact with a product or service, such as a website or an app. You may also set up focus groups to elicit responses from participants. Your other duties are to analyze your findings and make suggestions to, or collaborate with, designers and programmers to improve the product’s UX.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Researcher, you need a background in human-centered design, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and often a degree in psychology, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as usability testing platforms, survey software, data analysis tools, and sometimes UX research certifications is common. Strong communication, empathy, and analytical thinking are vital soft skills for uncovering user needs and translating findings into actionable insights. These competencies ensure that digital products are designed to meet real user needs, ultimately driving user satisfaction and business success.

How does a user researcher typically collaborate with product and design teams during a project?

User Researchers play a key role in bridging the gap between users and the teams building products. They frequently work alongside product managers and designers, sharing insights from user interviews, usability tests, and surveys to inform design decisions. In agile environments, User Researchers often participate in sprint planning and review meetings, ensuring that user feedback is integrated at every stage of the development process. Effective collaboration requires clear communication and the ability to translate research findings into actionable recommendations, helping teams prioritize features and improvements that best meet user needs.

Job description

As AWS customers shift from console-based building to AI-augmented and agent-primary workflows, this role sits at the forefront of that transformation. You will lead research that shapes agentic products and experiences across AWS - cultivating new methodologies, partnering with science and engineering teams, and building the metrics and frameworks that assess experience impact at scale.
We are seeking a UX Researcher with deep experience in agentic tools and large-scale systems. You will deliver insights that inform Experience Health metrics and segmentation, product strategy for AI-first and agent customers, and define where humans remain in the loop

This role requires a strong balance of technical fluency and a deep understanding of humans and their expected outcomes.
You will bring creativity and a Learn and Be Curious mindset, partnering with science, engineering, and product teams across AWS to deliver solutions at scale. We move fast, and we need someone who can keep pace while maintaining a high bar for quality.
The problems are genuinely interesting. With wide adoption of agentic AI, customer needs and expectations are changing fundamentally - and there are many new problems we do not yet have answers for

We have more questions than we can conduct research to answer, and that is where you come in.
Key job responsibilities
Design and execute qualitative and quantitative research to inform agent and agent-assisted experience strategy across AWS
Partner with engineering teams to build agent tooling and research instrumentation
Develop thought leadership on AI-augmented and agent-primary experiences that influences product development across AWS
Lead EXA data product delivery with cross-functional teams, bringing the AI-first and agent-customer perspective
Build prototypes using agentic tools to bring research insights to life and communicate ideas to stakeholders
Contribute to the team's research direction by proposing new approaches, maintaining the research knowledge base, and identifying emerging behaviors
Mentor junior researchers
About the team
AWS Experience Analytics (EXA) turns customer understanding into products and intelligence that teams across AWS can use. We are building a unified customer lifecycle data platform and customer intelligence system that delivers deep customer understanding at scale. Our team approaches data both qualitatively and quantitatively, fusing customer insights with telemetry to tell actionable customer stories - insight is the critical layer that makes data meaningful
