Job description

Position Overview

Tews Company is seeking aย Senior Mechanical Design Engineerย with a strong background inย commercial product design, particularly for environments whereย form, usability, and visual appeal are as critical as function.

This role is ideal for an engineer who can bridgeย mechanical engineering and industrial design principles, creating products that not only perform reliably but also meet the expectations ofย end users in clinical or professional settings.

The right candidate will have experience designingย customer-facing hardware productsโ€”not just internally housed systemsโ€”and will bring a refined understanding ofย modern product aesthetics, ergonomics, and usability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadย end-to-end mechanical designย of new products and design enhancements
  • Developย enclosures and assembliesย for electronic and electromechanical systems
  • Translate complex technical requirements intoย intuitive, user-friendly product designs
  • Ensure products balanceย functionality, manufacturability, and visual appeal
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Driveย New Product Introduction (NPI)ย from concept through production
  • Manage and executeย Engineering Change Notices (ECNs)ย and configuration management activities
  • Assess design changes for impact onย product performance, safety, and compliance
  • Support supplier development and ensure manufacturable, scalable designs
  • Contribute to continuous improvement ofย design and change management processes

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
(or 5โ€“10 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree)
  • 5โ€“10+ years of experience inย mechanical design engineering, with a strong emphasis onย commercial product development

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven experience designingย products used by end usersย (e.g., commercial, healthcare, or consumer-facing equipment)
  • Strong understanding ofย product form, ergonomics, and visual design considerations
  • Experience with:
    • Electrical/electronic enclosure design
    • Plastic injection molded components
    • Metal castings and machining processes
    • Gear trains, bearings, and motion systems
    • Thermal analysis of electronic assemblies
  • Proficiency inย CAD tools and PLM systems
  • Working knowledge ofย ERP systems and Microsoft Office tools

Regulatory & Quality Systems:

  • Experience working withinย regulated quality systemsย (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 9000, or similar)
  • Familiarity withย design controls, risk management, and change impact assessment
  • Understanding ofย product risk frameworksย (e.g., ISO 14971 or equivalent)

Preferred Background

  • Experience designing products that integrateย electronics, sensors, or signal-based technologiesย (e.g., RF, IoT, embedded systems)
  • Exposure toย biometric or sensor-based systemsย (e.g., ECG, CO2, SpO2, heart rate monitoring)
  • Background in industries whereย precision, reliability, and user interaction intersect
  • Military or aerospace experience is acceptableย only if complemented by commercial product design experience

What Sets This Role Apart

This is not a role focused solely on internal mechanical systems or ruggedized hardware. Success in this position requires the ability to design products that:

  • Areย visually modern and intuitive
  • Feel appropriate forย professional, user-facing environments
  • Balanceย engineering precision with thoughtful product design

Candidates who have primarily worked onย enclosed or non-user-facing hardware (e.g., aerospace or defense systems)ย without exposure to product aesthetics and usability will not be the right fit.

Key Traits for Success

  • Strong design judgment with anย eye for clean, modern product aesthetics
  • Ability to think beyond function and consider theย end-user experience
  • High attention to detail in bothย engineering performance and product presentation
  • Comfortable operating in aย fast-paced, collaborative environment
