The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated Senior Software Engineer to lead our internal Polaris team in enabling Business Configuration and Product Configuration (BC/PC) delivery on the Accenture Life Insurance & Annuity Platform (ALIP) - USAA's strategic policy administration system for life and annuity products. In this role you will own the engineering practices that turn business and actuarial requirements into deployed configuration across ALIP's full policy lifecycle - application intake, underwriting, issuance, and in-force servicing - through the BC/PC configuration set and its GitLab CI/CD promotion pipelines. You will serve as the primary technical liaison between USAA and our platform partner (Accenture), translating requirements across teams, leading design and code/config reviews, and ensuring that changes to underwriting logic (HLQ), business rules, workflows, and UI configuration deploy safely and predictably to production. You will also partner closely with USAA integration, underwriting, and Data & Analytics teams to align ALIP with upstream and downstream systems - from new business and requirement-ordering integrations to reporting and staging pipelines.

Demonstrates strong engineering thought leadership and applies deep technical expertise to deliver reliable, well-tested configuration and integration changes across a highly configurable, mission-critical insurance platform. Leads code and configuration reviews, mentors engineers, and drives operational improvements in the BC/PC delivery pipeline. Anticipates and troubleshoots production issues spanning configuration, integration, and infrastructure layers, and articulates complex technical trade-offs to both technical and business audiences to keep delivery aligned to USAA's mission, brand, and strategic priorities.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based in San Antonio; TX or Plano; TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, code, and test complex tactical as well as strategic technical solutions across many technologies, including emerging technologies, to integrate existing systems and tools, collaborating with Engineers or Architects within their team/department and occasionally outside of their domain.

  • Lead code/design reviews and communicates updates to stakeholders with team to ensure smooth daily operations and accurate planning.

  • Develop complex algorithms to solve business needs.

  • Investigates and resolves complex application and system technical problems and production issues by directing troubleshooting of end-to-end solutions.

  • Mentors engineers, coaches engineers on design, development, and maintenance of systems; Reviews teammates' code.

  • Influence and help shape the future of their specific domain's architecture and quality standards and understand, identify, measure across entire solution.

  • Identify system performance issues, to include technical debt, and optimize solution

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • 6 years of software development experience with depth in a specific discipline(s)/technology(s), including highly configurable, business-rule-driven systems.

  • 4 years delivering solutions across all phases of the software development lifecycle, to include leading code/design reviews and coordinating delivery across vendor and internal teams.

  • Basic understanding of one or more of: Java, JavaScript, SQL, Go, and Python - with practical experience applying at least one to configuration, data, or integration work (e.g., Java, SQL, Python, or XML/XPath).

  • Demonstrated experience researching technical issues and troubleshooting production problems across applications, configuration, and integrations - tracing behavior from UI and business rules to data and messaging layers.

  • Experience articulating technical challenges and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and aligning cross-functional teams without direct authority.

  • Strong knowledge of secure coding practices and secure system fundamentals (including safe handling of sensitive member/health data) and cloud technologies (AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, containers, GitLab CI/CD).

  • Hands-on experience deliveringBusiness/Product Configuration on the Accenture Life Insurance & Annuity Platform (ALIP)- business rules, workflows, page groups, lookup tables, TCDs, andautomated underwriting (HLQ)- deployed to production via CI/CD promotion pipelines, and integrating the platform with new business, underwriting, and requirement-ordering partners(e.g., NAAR, prefill, vendor order flows) andData & Analytics / staging pipelines.

  • Experience inlife, annuity, or health insurance policy administrationwith command of the platform stack (AWS EKS, PostgreSQL/Aurora, ActiveMQ/AmazonMQ, Redis, Control-M), plus thetechnical leadershipto serve as the liaison between USAA and a platform vendor (e.g., Accenture), lead reviews, and mentor engineers.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $114,080- $218,030.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
