Security Officer (On-Call)

We are seeking a professional and knowledgeable Security Officer to join our team in an On-call position. The ideal candidate will have flexibility to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekdays, weekends, and/or holidays. The essential responsibilities for the Security Officer may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Protects Port property by maintaining a safe and secure environment for employees, tenants and visitors.
  • Performs Security Officer duties as assigned in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Facilities Security Plan (FSP).
  • Responds to all issues and/or incidents as they occur. Ensures response procedures and notifications are in compliance with Port policies and US Coast Guard regulations and are appropriately documented.
  • Learns and performs berthing procedures for cargo ships entering and leaving the Port.
  • Assists with the evacuation or movement of employees, tenants and visitors in emergency situations.
  • Maintains and develops a customer service-oriented relationship with staff, tenants, contractors, labor, and members of the public.
  • Maintains relationships with local, state, and federal agencies responsible for response, safety, and security.
  • May work various day and night shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Actively supports the Port's mission and vision and demonstrates values consistently.
  • Works effectively as a team player with all Port employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a security, public safety, or military-related field, with demonstrated conflict management techniques and excellent customer service skills. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
License/Certification: Valid, unrestricted driver's license with good driving record. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) upon hire. Must pass a criminal background check and drug screen at time of hire.
Communication Skills: High level of written and verbal communications skills required. Ability to appraise and effectively diffuse potential problems quickly and discreetly; strong conflict management skills, with the ability to remain calm and effective in challenging situations. Must be able to communicate effectively across the entire organization and with the general public. Requires effective listening abilities. Ability to write detailed reports. Must be able to develop and maintain mutually cooperative relationships with a diverse population of staff, ILWU, stevedores, tenants, customers, and the neighboring community.
Customer Service: Must consistently provide welcoming, friendly, courteous, prompt, and informative service. Gains cooperation and agreement from co-workers and management; knows when to push harder and when to ease off. Ability to work professionally with the public, employees, and management to facilitate company needs.
Organizational Skills: Able to prioritize and organize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Must have the capacity to balance both short- and long-term issues effectively and handle many simultaneous and often conflicting and changing priorities.
Problem Solving Skills: Logically thinks through and solves problems involving several variables. Remains objective in gathering and reporting all information surrounding issues and/or incidents.
Computer Skills: Proficient computer skills with an emphasis on Microsoft Office suite, and the ability to learn and navigate other software applications including but not limited to ADP, KPA Flex, Everbridge, ScheduleAnywhere, etc. Ability to use standard office equipment including telephone, copier, fax machine, etc.
Physical Requirements/Environment:
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, and bend for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Talk, hear, walk, push/pull, stoop, kneel and reach on a regular to seldom basis.
  • Repetitive hand motions on a frequent basis including fingering, grasping, and handling.
  • Ability to read handwritten and typed documents on paper and computer screens.
  • Ability to communicate continuously via telephone for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and drive on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to perform and directly assist in rescue operations which may involve lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, jumping down from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles, crawling in confined areas, balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and at various outdoor locations where adverse weather conditions, uneven ground, exposure to moving machinery and moderate to loud noise is common.
  • Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle multiple times during a given shift. Must be able to open and close warehouse doors, gates and fences.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and steps.
  • May be called to work at any time of the day or night.
Mental Requirements:
  • Continuous use of communication skills on a moderate level, involving problem solving and quick decision-making skills.
  • Continuously work with timelines and standards involving a combination of recurring and varying job duties and independent analysis of information.
  • Required to communicate effectively, follow and understand both verbal and written instructions.
  • Requires the ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Work responsibilities continuously require teamwork and cooperation as well as the practice of discretion and confidentiality.

In a normal workday, frequent and continuous refer to more than a 50% requirement; regular refers up to 50% and seldom refers to approximately 10%.
