What is operational technology (OT) cyber security?

Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security refers to the practices and technologies used to protect industrial systems and critical infrastructure, such as manufacturing plants, power grids, and transportation networks, from cyber threats. Unlike traditional IT security, OT Cyber Security focuses on the unique hardware and software that monitor and control physical devices and processes. The primary goal is to ensure the safety, reliability, and availability of essential services by preventing unauthorized access, disruption, or damage to these systems. As cyber threats targeting OT environments become more common, companies are urgently seeking professionals with expertise in securing these critical assets.

What are some common challenges faced by operational technology cyber security professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security professionals often encounter challenges such as integrating security measures into legacy systems, balancing system uptime with security updates, and bridging the gap between IT and OT teams. These challenges can be addressed by fostering cross-departmental communication, implementing robust network segmentation, and continuously updating risk assessments. Additionally, staying informed about emerging threats and participating in ongoing training are crucial for effectively managing security in complex industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operational technology (OT) cyber security professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operational Technology Cyber Security professional, you need a solid understanding of industrial control systems (ICS), network security principles, risk assessment, and typically a degree in computer science, information security, or a related field. Familiarity with security frameworks (like NIST or IEC 62443), incident response tools, and certifications such as CISSP, GICSP, or CompTIA Security+ are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help professionals address threats and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial to safeguard critical infrastructure, minimize downtime, and ensure the resilience of essential operational systems.

The architect will guide cybersecurity strategy across pipelines, terminals, storage facilities, and industrial control systems. This position directly influences operational reliability, modernization efforts, and long‑term critical‑infrastructure protection.

Role Overview

The OT Cybersecurity Architect will define secure reference architectures, establish standards, and ensure industrial operations remain safe, resilient, and highly available. You will collaborate with Operations Technology, Engineering, Network, Cloud, Security Operations, and external partners to reduce cyber risk without disrupting uptime.

This role requires deep expertise in ICS/SCADA environments and a strategic mindset capable of shaping enterprise‑level OT security direction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define secure architectures for pipeline, terminal, storage, and industrial environments.

  • Establish OT cybersecurity standards, design principles, and segmentation strategies.

  • Architect secure solutions for SCADA, DCS, PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, SIS, historian systems, engineering workstations, and industrial IoT/edge platforms.

  • Implement secure IT/OT integration, industrial DMZs, firewalls, jump servers, vendor access, and industrial wireless networks.

  • Lead Zero Trust adoption within OT environments.

  • Provide architectural guidance for IDS/NDR, OT asset discovery, vulnerability management, SIEM integration, and passive monitoring technologies.

  • Support incident response, forensic investigations, and post‑incident architecture improvements.

  • Conduct OT architecture risk assessments and develop compensating controls where operational constraints exist.

  • Evaluate emerging OT cybersecurity technologies and lead proof‑of‑concept initiatives.

  • Present architecture recommendations to engineering leadership and executive stakeholders.

  • Ensure alignment with industry frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISA/IEC 62443, and CIS Controls.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 8+ years in OT, ICS, or industrial cybersecurity.

  • 3+ years designing enterprise or industrial cybersecurity architectures.

  • Experience securing pipeline, terminal, refinery, manufacturing, or critical‑infrastructure environments.

  • Strong background with SCADA, PLCs, HMIs, RTUs, and industrial communication protocols.

  • Proven experience designing secure industrial network architectures and IT/OT segmentation.

  • Experience supporting highly available, safety‑critical operational environments.

Preferred Certifications
  • ISA/IEC 62443

  • CISSP

  • CISM

  • Microsoft Cybersecurity Architect Expert (SC‑100)

  • CCNP Security

  • Fortinet NSE

Success Measures

  • Effective IT/OT segmentation and secure modernization.

  • Reduced cyber risk across industrial operations.

  • Increased visibility into OT assets and events.

  • Strong collaboration between Cybersecurity, Engineering, and Operations.

  • Positive outcomes in audits, assessments, and regulatory reviews.

Why This Role Matters

This position plays a central role in protecting critical infrastructure systems. The architect will help secure industrial operations, support modernization initiatives, and ensure OT environments remain reliable and future ready.
