Job description

The Milling Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of milling equipment used to remove and grind pavement surfaces prior to resurfacing projects. This role plays a vital part in preparing roadways and other surfaces for paving by ensuring accurate depth control, smooth milling, and proper coordination with ground crews and trucking operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate milling machine to remove asphalt surfaces to specified depths and profiles.
  • Set, monitor, and adjust milling machine controls to achieve accurate grades, slopes, and surface smoothness.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting on milling equipment.
  • Coordinate with ground crew, truck drivers, and project supervisors to ensure safe and efficient job site operations.
  • Monitor work area for hazards and ensure compliance with company safety policies.
  • Load milled material onto trucks, ensuring even and efficient distribution.
  • Keep accurate records of daily production, equipment use, and maintenance performed.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining work zones, tools, and equipment.
Qualifications:
  • Prior experience operating heavy equipment; specific milling experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of construction site safety practices and traffic control standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, project drawings, and job specifications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, and operate controls for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, and handling of tools and materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Work outdoors in variable weather conditions, around heavy equipment, dust, and noise.
Work Environment:
  • Roadway and construction site environments often require night or weekend work.
  • High attention to safety and coordination with other crew members to minimize hazards.
