How much do urgent care jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for urgent care in the United States is $24.76, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $25.24 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a type of medical service that provides immediate treatment for illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening but still require prompt attention. These centers serve as a convenient option for patients who need care outside of regular doctor's office hours or cannot wait for an appointment. Common conditions treated at urgent care include minor fractures, sprains, flu symptoms, cuts, and infections. Urgent care centers often have shorter wait times than emergency rooms and can be more affordable for non-emergency issues.

What Is an Urgent Care Job?

Healthcare professionals working in urgent care will treat walk-in patients with minor illnesses and injuries. Urgent care clinics are open when doctors’ offices are not, so workers will have to be there nights and weekends. The volume of patients varies every day, but the variety appeals to those who want breaks in routines. An urgent care job is a great role for nurses or physicians looking for locum tenens (temporary) work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Urgent Care Provider, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Urgent Care Provider, you need a solid background in acute patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, generally supported by a medical degree (MD, DO, NP, or PA) and relevant state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), point-of-care diagnostics, and urgent care clinical protocols is essential. Strong decision-making, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing a wide range of cases and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Mastering these skills ensures timely, accurate care for diverse patient populations in a fast-paced environment.

What is the difference between Urgent Care vs Emergency Room Physician?

AspectUrgent CareEmergency Room Physician
Required CredentialsMedical license, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner certificationMedical license, MD or DO degree, Emergency Medicine certification
Work EnvironmentUrgent care clinics, retail clinics, outpatient settingsHospital emergency departments, trauma centers
Employer & IndustryUrgent care chains, outpatient clinicsHospitals, trauma centers, large medical facilities
Common Search & ComparisonPatients seeking quick, non-life-threatening carePatients with severe, life-threatening conditions requiring immediate attention

Urgent care providers handle non-emergency medical issues in outpatient settings, focusing on quick treatment for minor injuries and illnesses. Emergency room physicians manage critical, life-threatening conditions in hospital emergency departments. While both roles require medical licenses, emergency physicians have additional training in emergency medicine. Patients typically visit urgent care for minor issues, whereas ER physicians treat more severe emergencies.

What are some common challenges faced by clinicians working in urgent care settings?

Clinicians in urgent care often encounter a fast-paced environment with a high volume of patients presenting with a wide range of medical issues, from minor injuries to acute illnesses. Managing time efficiently while maintaining high-quality care can be challenging, as cases are unpredictable and patient flow varies throughout the day. Additionally, urgent care professionals must be prepared to make quick decisions, collaborate closely with other healthcare providers, and communicate clearly with patients who may be anxious or in discomfort. Adaptability and strong teamwork skills are essential for success in this dynamic setting.
