Job description

Job Title: Helper - 1st and 3rd - 19/hr

Job Description

This role supports production by assisting machine operators with set-ups, material handling, and equipment monitoring in a steel manufacturing environment. The Helper safely loads and unloads coils and finished goods, maintains a clean work area, and helps ensure product quality throughout the manufacturing process.

Responsibilities

  • Assist machine operators in setting up equipment as required for production runs.
  • Observe material flow, coil feeders, and machine operation, and adjust or manipulate controls as needed under guidance.
  • Load coils onto welders using a sit-down forklift and coil grippers in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Monitor equipment during operation to help identify issues and maintain consistent production.
  • Inspect material to verify quality and identify nonconforming pieces.
  • Unload material from machines and move it to designated areas.
  • Restock coils and ensure materials are available for continuous production.
  • Maintain a clean and organized working area to support safety and efficiency.
  • Unload finished goods to the staging area for further processing or shipment.
  • Assist with preparing coils by cutting, matching ends, and welding coil ends as directed.
  • Handle steel materials safely using forklifts, cranes, and other material handling tools as required.

Essential Skills

  • Proven forklift experience, preferably with sit-down forklifts.
  • Prior manufacturing experience in a production or industrial environment.
  • Machine operation experience, with the ability to support operators and understand basic machine functions.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately.
  • General labor experience involving physical work and material handling.
  • Experience working safely around steel or heavy materials.
  • Comfort operating or assisting with bandsaws, saws, and other cutting equipment.
  • Basic material handling skills, including loading, unloading, and staging materials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a steel manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Overhead crane experience is a plus.
  • Construction, production, or laborer experience is beneficial.
  • Experience as a saw operator or bandsaw operator is advantageous.
  • Ability to operate or assist with forklifts, fork trucks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Strong attention to safety and quality in a fast-paced industrial setting.

Work Environment

The role is based in a mid-size steel manufacturing facility that operates multiple shifts. There are openings on 1st and 3rd shift, with typical schedules following a 6:00 a.m.โ€“2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m.โ€“10:00 p.m., or 10:00 p.m.โ€“6:00 a.m. structure. Overtime may be required, generally by adding two hours to a shift to create 10-hour workdays, with at least 24 hoursโ€™ notice provided. The environment involves working around steel materials, production machinery, forklifts, and potentially overhead cranes. The dress code requires jeans, steel-toe shoes, and long shirts or sleeves. Gloves, arm sleeves, and a hard hat can be provided to support safety while performing material handling and production tasks.
