Job Summary A train service employee responsible for the safe and efficient switching of railcars and assisting with train operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct the movement of rail cars and train movements
  • Receives, relays, or acts upon oral, written or radio instructions indicating the switch movement, placement or delivery of railroad cars and/or trains
  • Observe, interpret and relay arm, lantern or radio signals affecting movement of the train
  • Operate track switches to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits
  • Set or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties
  • Inspect the condition of the train, track and equipment in movement and while stationary
  • Able to ride on the ladder side of a rail car for an extended period of time
  • Complete minor repairs to locomotives including all preventative maintenance
  • Clean and lock cars as needed
  • Read and understand the rulebook, timetables, GCORE, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions, standard work and other written or printed material
  • Prepare required daily reports to include but not limited to, turn over sheets, locomotive inspections and daily reports
  • Prepare billing and other communications to the UPRR and internal customers
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Qualifications

Must be able to read, write, and speak English High school diploma preferred Must have excellent mechanical aptitude High School Diploma or GED. College / Trade education a plus

Working Conditions

Continuous exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme noise, and working outdoors in all weather conditions Must wear personal protective equipment while at the location

Physical Requirements

Requires walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. Job involves sitting most of the time, but also involves walking or standing for brief periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, in order to communicate to employees/visitors.
