What are Unpaid Java positions?

Unpaid Java positions are opportunities, often in the form of internships or volunteer roles, where individuals work with Java programming without receiving financial compensation. These roles are typically designed for students or entry-level programmers to gain hands-on experience, build their portfolios, and improve their Java development skills. While they do not provide a salary, unpaid positions can offer valuable mentorship, networking, and learning experiences that may lead to paid opportunities in the future.

What is the difference between Unpaid Java vs Paid Java Developer?

Unpaid Java roles are typically for gaining experience, building a portfolio, or contributing to open-source projects. Paid Java Developer positions offer financial compensation and are part of a professional career path. The main difference lies in compensation, work environment, and credentials required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, understanding of object-oriented concepts, and typically a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs) like Eclipse or IntelliJ, version control systems such as Git, and experience with frameworks like Spring or Hibernate are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies ensure efficient development, collaboration, and the delivery of robust, scalable software solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by developers in unpaid Java internships and how can they make the most of the experience?

Unpaid Java internships often present challenges such as balancing learning with limited resources, adapting to unfamiliar codebases, and staying motivated without financial compensation. However, these roles provide valuable opportunities to gain hands-on experience, build a portfolio, and network with industry professionals. Proactively seeking feedback, volunteering for diverse tasks, and documenting your learning can help maximize the benefits and demonstrate initiative to potential future employers.

Nature: Voluntary (unpaid)
Location: Remote
The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is an international volunteers-led think tank supporting and advocating the application of blockchain technology in the global fight against climate change.
Our Data Policy
What will you be doing?
We are looking for passionate VOLUNTEER Blockchain Software Developers who take a methodological approach to their work, conduct independent research and analysis, engage with key stakeholders and establish strategic partnerships to progress BCI's core mission.
Blockchain software developers, which belong to the Technology Officer Grade, are expected to possess experience across a range of Distributed Ledger Technologies (e.g. Hyperledger, Ethereum).
Skills range can span the entire ecosystem, from the core developer of cryptographic algorithms to just support testing and operations of established ledgers.

  • To provide inputs for Councils established under the BCI Fellowship Scheme;
  • To support the development of Proof-of-Concept DLT applications across sectors (e.g. Finance, Energy, etc); and
  • To attend conferences and events to promote the BCI, demonstrate prototypes, and engage with key stakeholders.

Requirements
Education & Training:
  • A relevant degree or training in a relevant discipline, e.g. Computing, Engineering, Math, Physics, etc (Master's or Ph.D. are a plus);
  • Experience in producing research outputs and structured reports for different audiences.

Credentials:
  • Minimum one year's solid experience in developing blockchain systems;
  • Familiar with mainstream public chains, such as Bitcoin, Hyperledger, Ethereum, Tether, EOS, Ripple, and Monero;
  • Sound knowledge of Linux and Cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Azure);
  • Familiar with third-party tools such as GitHub and other open-source projects;
  • Familiar with consensus mechanisms and encryption algorithms such as PoW, PoS, DPos, PBFT, RPCA, and Raft;
  • Experience with software development, e.g. Java, C++, Solidity, JS, Go, Python;
  • Experience developing smart contracts within existing and emerging DLTs and knowledge of standards for token contracts (e.g. ERC20);
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and other aspects of Microservice Architectures and DevOps;
  • Willingness to constantly learn & improve, challenging yourself to stay at the top of your game.

Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, work flexibly across professional and operational boundaries, and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels;

General & Specialist Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office; and
  • Strong depth of knowledge on topics central to the BCI such as climate change, climate finance, blockchain technology, and artificial intelligence preferred (see vacancy description for details).

Benefits
Blockchain and other emerging technologies. Climate change and sustainability. These are two hot topic groups that have been headlining media outlets, dominating conferences & events, and gaining increasing traction in research and pilot projects. BCI is here as an expert platform to help governments, inter-governmental and regional organizations as well as relevant corporates to negotiate the complex landscape of emerging technologies for environmental good.
We cement our expertise by putting in the hard work in researching, identifying, and analyzing the applications of emerging technologies so that informed decisions can be made by the stakeholders in the climate change and action network.
Benefits you will get from volunteering with BCI are enormous and some include:
  • Your mind will be mentally stimulated, hence providing you with a sense of purpose;

Selection Process
As a voluntary organization, we are pleased to open the door for candidates who may not have the prior experience they need to start, progress, or switch their careers. To recruit the most suitable, talented, or potential new members out of the volume of applications received, it is the BCI's policy to also consider inexperienced candidates to fill our voluntary unpaid roles as long as they can demonstrate the skills required in the written assessment. In the selection process, most candidates will be invited to complete the following assessment.
