Assistant Controller

SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller will serve as a key financial leader, directing the day-to-day operations of the accounting team and ensuring compliance with GAAP standards. This senior manager-level role will manage financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, and oversee the finance team's integration of new acquisitions and new-build locations to support corporate scaling.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Oversee the Finance team's role in the end-to-end integration of new acquisitions and new-build locations (ie. onboarding veterinary practices, aligning accounting policies, and establishing opening balance sheets).
  • Review consolidated financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analyses for multi-unit operations.
  • Maintain, monitor, and enhance internal control frameworks across all accounting functions to mitigate risk.
  • Coordinate external audit processes, serving as the primary point of contact and managing the preparation of PBC (provided by client) schedules.
  • Partner with cross-functional leadership to streamline financial workflows, improve scalability, and support strategic corporate objectives.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and professional development to the Accounting department.
  • Manage complex accounting treatments, including revenue recognition, purchase accounting for acquisitions, and multi-unit lease accounting.
  • Assist with ad-hoc financial reporting and special projects as requested by leadership.
  • Escalate significant financial risks, issues, or technical accounting questions to senior management.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the supervision, performance management, and leadership of the Accounting team, currently consisting of ten staff members.


PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record as a successful financial leader in a high-growth, multi-unit retail or veterinary care environment (or similar).


Required experience includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Alternatively, candidate can demonstrate proficiency with sufficient and relevant experience.
  • Ten years of progressive GAAP accounting experience, with at least three years in a supervisory or senior manager-level capacity.
  • Extensive experience with multi-unit business structures.
  • Strong background in M&A financial integration and opening accounting for new-build locations.
  • Advanced systems proficiency as defined in "Computer Skills" below.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred

  • Deep, authoritative understanding of GAAP accounting, multi-unit retail finance frameworks, and consolidation processes.
  • Proven track record in process improvement, with the ability to scale accounting operations to match rapid corporate growth.
  • Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to draft clear financial policies, internal control documentation, and executive summaries.
  • Proactive approach to communication, ensuring leadership and cross-functional stakeholders remain informed on financial metrics and project statuses.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner cross-functionally to manage upstream and downstream impacts of the accounting and integration lifecycles.
  • Hands-on leader willing to dive deep into complex technical accounting issues while effectively delegating operational tasks.
  • Excellent supervisory, analytical, and strategic leadership skills.


COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Proficiency in NetSuite required.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, with a strong knowledge of complex formulas, data analysis, and pivot tables, required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite of products (Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint) required.
  • Experience implementing or optimizing accounting software preferred.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

The role is remote with occasional visits to the Support Center office or regional locations for team meetings as required.
