What is a union?

A union is an organized group of workers who come together to collectively negotiate with employers over wages, benefits, working conditions, and other employment-related matters. Unions represent their members in discussions with management to secure better terms and protect workers' rights. By joining together, workers can increase their bargaining power and have a stronger voice in the workplace.

What is a union job?

A union job can refer to two separate types of jobs. One is jobs that support the structure of the union, such as research, organizing, and administration. The other is any job that is represented by a union. If you work for a union, you generally provide support and resources to your union members, such as helping to negotiate collective bargaining agreements with the management of a specific employer. If you work in a union, your duties and responsibilities are contingent on the type of work you do.

What are some common challenges faced by union representatives in balancing member advocacy with employer negotiations?

Union representatives often navigate the challenge of effectively advocating for members’ interests while maintaining constructive relationships with employers. Striking a balance between assertively addressing member concerns—such as fair wages, workplace safety, and job security—and fostering open, solution-oriented dialogue with management is essential. Representatives must also ensure transparent communication with union members, manage expectations, and stay updated on labor laws and contracts. These tasks require strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Representative, you need a strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining processes, and negotiation techniques, often backed by relevant experience or training in labor relations. Familiarity with grievance management systems, contract databases, and legal research tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills help a representative effectively support members and foster positive relationships. These skills ensure the Union can protect workers' rights, negotiate fair agreements, and address workplace issues efficiently.

Credit Union Manager

Omaha Riverfront

Lead with purpose. Safeguard accuracy. Champion financial wellbeing.

Gallup is seeking a talented, hands-on leader who can own sophisticated accounting work, lead and develop a small team, protect a regulated financial operation and support Gallup associates in strengthening their financial wellbeing.

As the credit union manager at Gallup Federal Credit Union (Gallup FCU), you'll ensure the credit union operates with financial integrity, regulatory discipline and exceptional member service while helping Gallup associates make informed financial decisions.

This role is for someone who is passionate about managing their team, translating vision into priorities, educating others through consultations and presentations, and improving operations while personally owning critical credit union responsibilities, including general ledger activity, reconciliations, financial reporting, compliance and member service.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach and support credit union associates, setting clear expectations, strengthening performance and stepping in to help get the work done when needed
  • Build trusted relationships with members, colleagues, and credit union and banking partners to support the credit union's mission and strengthen the member experience
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of Gallup FCU, working alongside the team to deliver responsive, member-first service
  • Manage general ledger activity, reconciliations and other critical accounting responsibilities, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records
  • Oversee accounts payable and support monthly financial statements, internal reporting and materials for credit union board meetings
  • Help ensure the credit union's financial stability and safeguard its assets in the best interests of members
  • Partner with Gallup leaders and the credit union board to translate priorities into practical plans and strong execution
  • Maintain compliance with National Credit Union Administration requirements and other applicable federal and state regulations
  • Represent Gallup FCU during audits and regulatory examinations, coordinating documentation, responding to requests and driving follow-up items to resolution
  • Maintain strong internal controls and accurate documentation while proactively identifying discrepancies, risks and opportunities to improve processes
  • Design and deliver engaging presentations, workshops and educational sessions to Gallup associates on foundational financial wellbeing topics, such as saving and debt management

Who We Want

  • Service-minded player-coaches who are passionate about helping credit union members strengthen their financial wellbeing while completing their own responsibilities and developing team members to perform at their best
  • Detail-oriented achievers who take pride in perfectly balanced accounts, precise reconciliations and strong follow-through
  • Integrity-driven professionals who consistently uphold transparency, accountability and strong internal controls
  • Organized multitaskers who calmly manage competing deadlines and adapt as priorities shift
  • Resourceful problem solvers who confidently assess issues, exercise sound judgment, strengthen processes and create practical efficiencies
  • Engaging presenters who communicate to individuals and groups with energy and confidence and who inspire others to take charge of their financial futures

What You Need

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field required
  • At least five years of accounting experience required
  • Experience working in a credit union or bank accounting environment required
  • Management or leadership experience in a credit union or bank preferred
  • General ledger experience and a strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting required
  • Proficiency with accounting systems required; QuickBooks® experience preferred
  • Experience supporting audits or regulatory examinations required
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills required
  • Ability to be bonded required
  • Ability to register with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) required
  • Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC) certification or willingness to obtain it preferred
  • A commitment to working on-site at Gallup's Omaha office five days per week required
  • Eligibility to work in the United States required; this position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship

What You'll Experience

  • Mission-driven work: Make a meaningful difference in the world with your unique contributions, commitment to service and exceptional outcomes.
  • An empowering culture: Collaborate with smart, passionate people who love what they do and welcome your ideas, perspectives and experiences.
  • Learning and development: Grow in your career as we invest in what you do best, encourage curiosity and create an environment where it's safe — and expected — to challenge the status quo.
  • Brand strength, startup energy: Thrive in an innovative environment backed by a trusted brand.
  • A vibrant workplace: Enjoy an on-site cafeteria, fitness center, federal credit union and state-of-the-art child development center, all on a beautiful downtown Omaha campus along the Missouri River.
