What opportunities for career advancement exist within union trades roles?

Union trades roles often provide clear pathways for career growth, such as progressing from apprentice to journeyman and then to master tradesperson or foreman. Many unions offer training and certification programs that support skill development and allow members to specialize in areas like supervision, safety compliance, or project management. Advancement can also be achieved by taking on leadership roles within the union itself, such as becoming a steward or serving on committees. The collaborative environment and mentorship culture within union trades make it easier for dedicated individuals to move up in their careers.

What trade pays the most in the union?

Batchelor & Kimball is a mechanical contractor headquartered in Conyers, Georgia. We take pride in partnering with our clients to deliver excellent results-from engineering and construction to operations and maintenance.

There's not a lot of BS here, and not a lot of turnover. Good people work at Batchelor & Kimball. We're good at our jobs, and good to each other. We have high expectations because the work is challenging, but we know the most valuable thing about the work is the people who do it. If this sounds like a good fit for you, we'd like to meet you.

We're looking for a Payroll Manager who knows payroll inside and out and can own the function from start to finish. This is an in-house role-no outsourcing-so we need someone who's confident, experienced, and ready to take full responsibility for delivering accurate, timely payroll every week.

What You'll Do:

Run weekly payroll for both field and office staff, including union and non-union employees.

Maintain payroll records, time sheets, and job costing data.

Accurately calculate wages, deductions, benefits, and taxes.

Handle union reporting and ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.

Submit union remittances and stay current on union rules and rates.

Prepare and file payroll tax returns (federal, state, and local).

Ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws, certified payroll reporting, and labor regulations.

Maintain and optimize payroll systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, or similar).

Collaborate with IT and HR to streamline payroll workflows and reporting.

Generate payroll reports for finance and project teams.

Support internal and external audits related to payroll and labor compliance.

Partner with HR on onboarding, terminations, and employee changes.

Work closely with project managers to ensure accurate job costing and labor allocation.

What you'll need (minimum qualifications):

Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll in the construction industry.

Strong understanding of union payroll, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.

Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Excel.

Knowledge of federal and state labor laws and tax regulations.

Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.

Good to have:

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

Experience with mechanical contracting or specialty trades.

Familiarity with construction accounting systems

CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification is a plus.

We offer our employees a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package and are always looking for individuals with the talent and skills required to contribute to our continued growth and success.
