Union Programmer information

What is a union programmer?

A Union Programmer is a software developer or coder who is a member of a labor union that represents tech workers. These unions negotiate fair wages, benefits, and working conditions on behalf of their members. Union Programmers may work in various industries, including entertainment, government, or technology, and they often have collective bargaining agreements that provide job security and standardized pay rates. Their role typically includes writing, testing, and maintaining software while benefiting from union protections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union programmer?

To thrive as a Union Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Java, or Python, along with a solid understanding of software development best practices and union guidelines. Experience with collaborative development tools (like Git), ticketing systems, and, in some sectors, knowledge of union-specific software or certifications may be required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution are vital soft skills, especially when working across diverse teams or on projects involving union-negotiated work rules. These skills and qualities ensure efficient, compliant, and productive software development within unionized environments.

What is the typical work environment and team structure for a union programmer?

Union Programmers often work in collaborative environments within medium to large organizations where programming staff are part of a labor union. You can expect to be part of cross-functional teams, frequently interacting with other developers, project managers, and sometimes union representatives to ensure both technical and contractual obligations are met. Work is typically structured around clearly defined tasks, standard hours, and specific guidelines established through collective bargaining agreements. Union Programmers often benefit from standardized job roles, fair pay scales, defined hours, and access to professional development opportunities provided by the union. This setting fosters both job security and opportunities for skill growth within a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Description

At KU Memorial Unions, we create welcoming spaces and meaningful experiences that support student success and enhance campus life. Through KU Dining, KU Catering, the KU Bookstore, and our building and event services, we serve the University of Kansas community with pride, hospitality, and purpose.

KU Memorial Unions is seeking either a Nutritionist or a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) to join our team. The Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) serves as a key contributor to the health, well-being, and overall campus experience of students, faculty, and staff by providing expert nutrition guidance within KU Dining Services. This position ensures campus dining programs support diverse dietary needs, meet established nutrition standards, and reflect KU Memorial Unions' commitment to creating inclusive, safe, and high-quality dining experiences.

Working collaboratively with culinary, operational, and campus partners, this position will lead nutrition-related initiatives including menu and recipe analysis, allergen management, nutrition technology oversight, and student wellness programming. This role also serves as the primary nutrition resource for students with medically necessary diets, food allergies, and other special dietary needs while supporting campus-wide wellness, accessibility, and food security initiatives.

Pay Rate

The anticipated salary for this position starts at $58,000 for the Nutritionist role and $63,000 for the Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) role. The final rate will be determined based on qualifications, experience, education, and years within the job or industry.
