Cnc Solidworks information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC SolidWorks specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC SolidWorks Specialist, you need strong proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), machining processes, and a solid understanding of engineering drawings, typically backed by a technical diploma or degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CNC programming languages (such as G-code), and experience with CAM software and CNC machine operation are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise product design, efficient manufacturing workflows, and smooth collaboration between engineers and machinists.

How do CNC SolidWorks professionals typically collaborate with machinists and engineers during the product development process?

CNC SolidWorks professionals play a vital role in bridging the gap between design and manufacturing by working closely with both machinists and engineers. They are responsible for creating detailed 3D models and technical drawings, which are then reviewed with engineers for accuracy and feasibility. Collaboration with machinists is essential to ensure that the designs are manufacturable, selecting appropriate materials, and optimizing tool paths. Regular communication and feedback loops help address any design challenges early, resulting in smoother production runs and reduced errors.

What is a CNC SolidWorks professional?

CNC SolidWorks professionals are experts who use SolidWorks, a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software, to design parts and assemblies that will be manufactured using CNC (computer numerical control) machines. They create detailed models and technical drawings, ensuring designs are optimized for CNC machining processes. These professionals bridge the gap between engineering design and manufacturing, making sure that digital models can be accurately produced by automated machinery. Their work involves both technical design skills and an understanding of manufacturing techniques.

Job description

Job Title: CNC Machinist / CNC Lathe and Mill Operator

Job Description

This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC lathes and CNC mills in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment. You will work from engineering documentation, ensure parts meet quality standards through precise inspection, and perform routine maintenance on equipment. Depending on your experience level, you may also develop and refine CNC machining processes, adjust or modify programs, and contribute to continuous improvement of tooling and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain CNC lathes and CNC mills in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings to produce parts that meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Work from bills of material (BOM) and bills of operations (BOO) to ensure correct materials, tooling, and processes are used.
  • Interpret and verify the correct bill of material for each job before starting production.
  • Perform in-process and final inspection of workpieces using gauges and other measuring equipment to validate dimensions and quality.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on machine tools to keep equipment in proper working condition.
  • Perform necessary machining duties using manual equipment such as drill presses and other manual machines when required.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to tooling, machine function, and raw materials to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Set up machine tools from process instructions, including installing tooling, setting work holding, and loading programs.
  • Inspect and validate first-piece parts to confirm that setups and programs produce conforming components before running production.
  • Adjust or modify CNC programming as needed to correct issues, improve quality, or enhance efficiency, within defined guidelines.
  • Support the development and implementation of CNC machining processes, including CNC programming, process tooling selection, work holding design, and process documentation, as experience allows.
  • Participate in first article validation to ensure new or revised processes meet all requirements.
  • Apply principles and techniques of machining and manufacturing to improve consistency, quality, and throughput.
  • Follow all guidelines, procedures, and safety practices as defined by the organization.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to complete assignments and support production goals.
  • Perform any other related functions and responsibilities assigned by leadership in support of department needs.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of CNC machining experience on CNC mills and/or CNC lathes.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machine language and codes to operate and make simple adjustments to programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints accurately.
  • Ability to interpret and identify the correct bill of material (BOM) for each job.
  • Experience working from a bill of material (BOM) and bill of operations (BOO) to follow defined processes.
  • Proficiency in performing inspection of workpieces using gauge equipment and other measuring tools.
  • Capability to perform routine maintenance on CNC machine tools to ensure reliable operation.
  • Ability to perform machining tasks using manual equipment such as drill presses and manual machines.
  • Knowledge of tooling and basic tooling maintenance for CNC machining operations.
  • Familiarity with various types of raw materials used in machining and how they affect processes.
  • Ability to identify problems with tooling, machine function, and raw materials and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Competence in setting up machine tools from process instructions, including tooling, work holding, and program loading.
  • Ability to inspect and validate first-piece parts to confirm proper setup and process capability.
  • Ability to adjust or modify CNC programs as needed within defined parameters.
  • Understanding of the principles and techniques associated with CNC machining.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Willingness to work assigned shifts and maintain a steady production schedule from Monday through Thursday.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a Level 2 or Level 3 CNC machinist, including more advanced setup and troubleshooting responsibilities.
  • Capability to develop and implement CNC machining processes, including CNC programming, process tooling selection, work holding design, process documentation, and first article validation.
  • Full competency in operating lathes, mills, and multi-axis CNC machines.
  • Understanding of automation in conjunction with machining processes.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM or design software.
  • Experience with drill presses, general machine operation, and broader machining practices.
  • Experience in CNC programming beyond basic code adjustments.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills in a machining environment.
