What is a union laborer?

Union laborers are skilled workers who perform a variety of tasks on construction sites, including demolition, excavation, building, and site preparation, and are members of a labor union. Being part of a union provides them with collective bargaining power, which helps secure better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Union laborers often receive specialized training and are required to follow strict safety standards. Their work is essential to the completion of many large-scale building and infrastructure projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union laborer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Laborer, you need physical stamina, basic construction knowledge, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by union apprenticeship programs. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety equipment, and compliance with OSHA standards is typically required. Dependability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These abilities ensure safe, efficient work and effective collaboration on construction sites, contributing to overall project success.

What are some common challenges union laborers face on the job site, and how can they be addressed?

Union Laborers often encounter physically demanding tasks, varying weather conditions, and the need to adapt quickly to changing project requirements. Effective communication with supervisors and team members is crucial to ensure safety and efficiency. Staying up-to-date with safety protocols, using proper protective equipment, and participating in ongoing training can help overcome these challenges and contribute to a safer, more productive work environment.

How do I get into a union laborer?

To become a union laborer, you typically need to complete an apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. You can apply through local union halls or apprenticeship programs, which may have entrance requirements such as age, physical fitness, and a valid driver's license. Once accepted, completing the program grants you union membership and certification to work as a union laborer.

Is being a union laborer worth it?

Union laborers typically earn higher wages and receive better benefits compared to non-union workers, and they often have access to job security and collective bargaining rights. The job involves physical work in construction or maintenance environments, requiring skills such as operating tools and following safety protocols. However, it can also involve physically demanding work and irregular schedules depending on projects.

What does a union laborer do?

A union laborer performs manual labor tasks on construction sites, such as loading materials, digging trenches, and assisting skilled tradespeople. They often work with tools and equipment, follow safety protocols, and may need certifications like OSHA training. Their work supports the building and maintenance of infrastructure and buildings.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Implementing operational strategies that enhance efficiency, productivity, and consistency across all EPC project phases, from pre-construction through commissioning.
  • Collaborating closely with project managers, field teams, engineering groups, contractors, suppliers, and clients to maintain alignment and resolve issues quickly.
  • Ensuring compliance with union regulations, labor agreements, safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Managing Mini P&L responsibilities by monitoring costs, forecasting resource needs, and supporting financial performance across assigned EPC projects.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 10 or more years of experience in operations management, with a must-have background in high voltage substations. Working knowledge of grid operations, energy storage systems (BESS), and substation controls preferred. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.

  • Deep knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and safety management practices for high-voltage construction sites.
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking abilities to remain effective and composed while overseeing simultaneous critical-infrastructure operations.
  • Proficiency with project management tools (Primavera P6, MS Project) and solid technical understanding of substation systems, civil works, commissioning processes, and daily reporting requirements.
