Non-Union Hair Stylists operate independently or within non-union settings without union-negotiated benefits. The choice depends on the work environment and industry preferences.

How does working as a union hair stylist differ from working in a non-union salon environment?

As a union hair stylist, you typically work on film, television, or theater productions and are covered by collective bargaining agreements that outline wages, hours, and working conditions. Union environments provide more structured schedules, clear guidelines on overtime, and eligibility for benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans. Collaboration is frequent with other departments like makeup, costume, and production, requiring strong communication skills and adaptability to fast-paced, creative settings. Advancement opportunities can include moving into department head or key stylist roles, often based on experience and reputation within the industry.

What is a Union Hair Stylist?

A Union Hair Stylist is a professional hair stylist who is a member of a labor union, typically working in film, television, or theater productions. Being in a union, such as IATSE Local 706 in the United States, means that the stylist must follow union rules, standards, and wage agreements. Union Hair Stylists are responsible for designing, cutting, coloring, and styling hair for actors and performers on set, ensuring continuity and meeting the creative vision of the production. Union membership often provides job protections, benefits, and access to higher-profile projects. To work as a Union Hair Stylist, one usually needs significant experience and may need to complete a union application process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Union Hair Stylist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Union Hair Stylist, you need formal cosmetology training, a state license, and experience in hair cutting, coloring, and styling. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, sanitation protocols, and union guidelines (such as those from IATSE or local unions) is essential. Strong communication, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with production teams make you stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure safety, meet creative requirements, and maintain professional standards on set.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
