Job description

Overview:

Evaluate commercial loan/lease applications received primarily through the branch network channel. Adjudicate primarily new credit requests (of $25,000 or less) in accordance with designated approval authority with group credits and/or renewals (up to $100,000). Prepare credit analysis for commercial loan applications and enter credit applications into the credit system for underwriter review.  Conduct credit investigations, and prepare loan packages for underwriters and SBA officers for more complex and/or non-routine deals.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate commercial loan/lease applications received primarily through branch network channel (and potentially via our online channel assuming future functionality). Credit facilities include secured and unsecured term loans, commercial mortgages, lines of credit, letters of credit and equipment leases. Evaluate each loan applicant's financial condition, cash flow and credit history in order to make appropriate loan decisions within individual lending authority.
  • Initiate and process credit requests in credit system for underwriters.
  • Interact with loan underwriters, bank office managers, various SBA personnel, and external customers throughout the underwriting process.  Research M&T Bank systems for the status of loan and deposit accounts, and enter into the credit system.
  • Understanding of governmental credit support available to small business loans (SBA programs) is required.  Review proposed loan packages for SBA eligibility following SBA program guidelines, policies and procedures for more complex and/or non-routine deals.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities:

Incumbent is to ensure customer credit requests are processed in accordance with bank policy, compliance and Business Banking underwriting guidelines in a timely manner that supports the bank's ability to deliver superior customer service. This allows the department to deliver high customer service as evidenced with a short turnaround time, which has a direct effect on the Department's ability to meet its Service Level Agreements.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and one year commercial or business banking underwriting or related credit processing experience or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 5 years higher education and/or work experience to include one year commercial or business banking underwriting or related credit processing experience.

Education and Experience Preferred:

Working knowledge or financial statements, tax returns, and credit reports.

Requires knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.

Self-motivated, well organized and positive demeanor.

Strong verbal and written communication skills coupled with attractive negotiation skills.

Ability to work under critical time constraints.

Ability to function professionally at many different levels (clients, management, peers, etc). Consistently maintain a high level of professionalism and service when dealing with various loan and lease sources.
