Underwriter Development Program information

What is an underwriter development program?

An Underwriter Development Program is a structured training initiative offered by insurance companies or financial institutions to prepare individuals for careers as underwriters. Participants typically receive a mix of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship to learn about risk assessment, policy evaluation, and decision-making processes. The goal of the program is to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate insurance applications, determine coverage terms, and assess potential risks. These programs often lead to full-time underwriting positions upon successful completion.

What can I expect from the training and mentorship provided in an underwriter development program?

Participants in an Underwriter Development Program typically receive a blend of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship from experienced underwriters. You can expect to rotate through various lines of business, work on real case studies, and gradually take on more responsibility as you build your technical and analytical skills. Mentors and managers provide regular feedback and support, helping you to understand underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and client interaction. This structured training approach prepares you for a successful underwriting career and often leads to advancement opportunities within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an underwriter development program, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Underwriter Development Program, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field. Proficiency with risk assessment software, Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with industry regulations or progress toward certifications like CPCU are often valued. Effective communication, critical thinking, and strong organizational skills help candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate risk analysis, clear client interactions, and the ability to manage complex portfolios in the insurance industry.

What is the difference between Underwriter Development Program vs Underwriter?

The Underwriter Development Program is designed to train and develop new talent into underwriters, providing structured learning and mentorship. An underwriter, on the other hand, is a fully qualified professional responsible for assessing risks and making underwriting decisions. The program prepares individuals for a career as an underwriter, who then performs the core job functions within the insurance industry.

How hard is it to get an underwriter development program job?

Securing an underwriter development program position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree, strong analytical skills, and sometimes prior internship experience. Competition can be moderate to high, and candidates often need to demonstrate proficiency in risk assessment, attention to detail, and familiarity with underwriting tools or software.

Job description

Job Description:

Established nearly two centuries ago, FM is a leading mutual insurance company whose capital, scientific research capability and engineering expertise are solely dedicated to property risk management and the resilience of its policyholder-owners. These owners, who share the belief that the majority of property loss is preventable, represent many of the worldโ€™s largest organizations, including one of every four Fortune 500 companies. They work with FM to better understand the hazards that can impact their business continuity to make cost-effective risk management decisions, combining property loss prevention with insurance protection.

FM Renewable Energy is seeking an underwriter to join our Renewable Energy Construction team, supporting a global portfolio of renewable energy clients and construction projects. This role will support our clients and broader client service teams in structuring programs, placing reinsurance, and will lead the underwriting assessment process through application of their authority and documentation of conclusions in FM systems and applications. Close collaboration will be required with the Account Manager, Renewable Engineer, broker partners, and clients alike.

Responsibilities:
  • Support account teams with underwriting activities and strategic account objectives, including exposure analysis, pricing, terms and conditions, program structure, reinsurance coordination, certificate and quotation preparation, and proposal support.
  • Participate in insurance program and policy development, working with internal operations teams to review documentation and maintain strong quality control over final materials delivered to clients and brokers.
  • Develop and maintain strong knowledge of FMโ€™s underwriting guidelines, policy terms and conditions, pricing approach, and profitability analysis to support sound program design and sustainable portfolio performance.
  • Support account servicing activities, including preparation for internal and client-facing meetings, presentations, and proposals, while continuing to develop effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Leverage external and internal relationships to understand clients' exposures, operating strategies and business goals, and ensures mutually agreed project plans meet the long-term loss prevention, underwriting, and risk transfer goals of both the client and FM.
  • Stay abreast of renewable energy and insurance market trends, and broader portfolio performance. Including competitor offerings, strengths and weaknesses, profitability, emerging trends, etc.
  • Learn and effectively use FMโ€™s underwriting systems, applications, procedures, and delegated authority framework.
  • Ensure underwriting documentation (policies, binders, endorsements) is accurate, complete, and properly issued, with underwriting decisions and rationale clearly documented in internal systems.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent; CIP designation desirable.
  • 2+ years of Market Underwriting experience with a strong understanding of insurance market dynamics, risk assessment, and program structuring.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate equipment and construction-related risks, place reinsurance, collaborate effectively with brokers and internal stakeholders, and quickly learn and adapt to new underwriting systems, procedures, and software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound underwriting decisions, apply underwriting guidelines, and learn new systems and tools in a structured underwriting environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, computer skills and attention to detail is required.
  • Working knowledge of account management, business communication, exposure analysis, negotiation, presentation skills, relationship management, and insurance program structure.
  • Strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills, with experience applying policy terms and conditions, pricing considerations, profitability analysis, and underwriting guidelines.
  • Experience with policy review, insurance program structure, global placements, complex property accounts, and multi-carrier placements is preferred.
  • Curious and driven to learn about new technologies, market practices, and trends.
  • Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation would be an advantage.

Varying levels of experience and qualifications will be considered.

The final salary offer will vary based on individual education, skills, and experience. The position is eligible to participate in FMโ€™s comprehensive Total Rewards program that includes an incentive plan, medical, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, well-being programs, a 401(k) and pension plan, career development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, flexible work, and time off, including vacation and sick time.

FM is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce.
