What kinds of jobs can someone under 18 years old do?

People under 18 years old can work in a variety of jobs, but there are restrictions to protect their safety and ensure their education is not disrupted. Common jobs for minors include babysitting, lawn care, retail positions, food service, and some roles in entertainment or office work. Certain hazardous jobs are off-limits, and there are limits on hours and times they can work, which vary by state and age. It’s important to check local child labor laws before starting a job. Work permits may also be required in some areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a youth worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Youth Worker, you need a background in youth development, counseling, and often a relevant degree or certification in social work or education. Familiarity with case management software, safeguarding protocols, and first aid certification is commonly required. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to build trust are critical soft skills for engaging and supporting young people. These skills ensure youth are guided effectively, their well-being is protected, and positive relationships are fostered.

What types of entry-level jobs are typically available for individuals under 18 years old, and what are common restrictions they should be aware of?

Employers may require a work permit or parental consent depending on local regulations. It's important to check state and federal laws to ensure compliance, and to seek roles that provide supportive training and flexible scheduling for students.
