Job description

UNC Health Johnston - Smithfield, located in Smithfield, NC, has a new OB Hospitalist Program and is seeking experienced OB Hospitalist Physicians to join this exciting initiative. This is a 100% inpatient, inhouse OB Hospitalist role offering a predictable schedule, strong clinical volumes, and the opportunity to help shape a growing program within the UNC Health system.
This OB Hospitalist group will operate as a separate, dedicated team supporting labor and delivery services at Smithfield, with long-term strategic growth planned for Johnston County.

Position Highlights

  • New OB Hospitalist program began April 1, 2026
  • Employed position within UNC Health Medical Group
  • Dedicated OB Hospitalist model - no outpatient clinic
  • Level II NICU at UNC Health Johnston - Smithfield
  • Strong, established referral base with consistent clinical volume
  • Opportunity to participate in program development and growth
Position Responsibilities
  • Provide 24/7 in-house OB Hospitalist coverage
  • Manage obstetric triage, labor, delivery, and postpartum care
  • Perform all deliveries at the Smithfield campus
  • Provide GYN care for cases presenting through the Emergency Department
  • Care for:
    • Unassigned patients presenting to the ED
    • Patients from the UNCHMG Traditional OB/GYN group at Smithfield
  • Collaborate with CNMs, nursing staff, anesthesia, and hospital leadership
  • Support quality initiatives, patient safety, and team-based care
Schedule
  • 24/7 in-house coverage required
  • (7) 24hr shifts per month
  • One OB Hospitalist in house per week
  • Physicians must remain in-house during shifts
  • No outpatient or call-back responsibilities
Candidate Requirements
  • MD or DO
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Prior OB Hospitalist experience required
  • ACLS certification required
