What is the difference between Ultra Precision Machining vs CNC Machining?

AspectUltra Precision MachiningCNC Machining
CredentialsTechnical certifications, machining experienceTechnical certifications, machining experience
Work EnvironmentClean, controlled environments for high-precision partsVaried environments, including workshops and factories
Industry UsageAerospace, medical devices, high-precision industriesAutomotive, manufacturing, general engineering
Work FocusAchieving extremely tight tolerances and surface finishesProducing parts efficiently with acceptable tolerances

Ultra Precision Machining focuses on creating highly precise components with tight tolerances, often in specialized industries like aerospace and medical devices. CNC Machining is broader, covering a wide range of manufacturing tasks with varying precision levels. While both roles require technical skills and certifications, Ultra Precision Machining emphasizes meticulous detail and surface quality, whereas CNC Machining prioritizes production efficiency.

Job description

Precitech designs and manufactures ultra precision machining solutions for freeform diamond turning, milling, and grinding which are used to produce optical lenses, mold inserts, mirrors, and precision mechanical components. Our machines produce rotationally symmetric, asymmetric, freeform, and sculpted geometries with form tolerances in the sub-micron range and nanometer surface finishes.

The Electrical Engineer will manage and direct the design and specification of wiring lists, schematic and circuit boards, and controls components for use in ultra precision, computer numerically controlled, machine tools. Collaborate and partner with various internal teams to deliver and support products in the field, including marketing/product managers, application engineering teams, manufacturing teams, and service teams.

Primary and secondary responsibilities will include:

  • Conceptualize and engineer new, unique electrical systems that meet customer requirements.
  • Represent panel layouts, schematics, wire run lists and assembly procedures using CAD systems and documentation such as Bill of Materials, specifications, and routing instructions.
  • Troubleshooting electrical noise and transients, controllers, servo systems, PMAC (programmable Multi-Axis Controller) or other sophisticated electronic equipment.
  • Perform engineering changes according to standard procedures with extreme attention to detail of the design, how the engineering changes will affect disposition of past, present and future effected products, and documentation.
  • Actively participate in product design reviews and work directly with the engineering staff to develop cost effective solutions.
  • Contribute to written instruction and operation manuals for Precitech's products.
