As of Jun 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for ultra high vacuum in the United States is $18.06, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an Ultra High Vacuum job?

An Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) job typically involves working with systems that require extremely low pressures, usually below 10⁻⁹ torr. Professionals in this field design, maintain, and operate vacuum systems used in scientific research, semiconductor manufacturing, and materials science. Responsibilities may include troubleshooting leaks, assembling vacuum components, and ensuring contamination-free environments. These roles often require expertise in vacuum technology, material properties, and precision instrumentation.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Ultra High Vacuum technician or engineer?

Ultra High Vacuum professionals are responsible for designing, assembling, testing, and maintaining vacuum systems that reach extremely low pressures, often below 10^-9 torr. Their daily tasks include monitoring system performance, identifying and fixing leaks, calibrating instruments, and documenting procedures and results. Depending on the workplace, they might also collaborate closely with scientists, researchers, or manufacturing teams to support experiments or production processes requiring UHV conditions. This role often involves both hands-on technical work and interaction with advanced diagnostic equipment, so strong technical skills and teamwork are essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ultra High Vacuum position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) technician or engineer role, you need strong knowledge of vacuum science, experience with high-vacuum equipment, and a background in physics or engineering (often supported by a related degree or certification). Familiarity with vacuum pumps, leak detectors, pressure gauges, cleanroom protocols, and CAD or control systems is typically essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for success in this field. These abilities are important because maintaining UHV systems requires precise technical execution, troubleshooting, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal performance and safety.
