Ul508A Panel information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UL508A Panel Builder, and why are they important?

To excel as a UL508A Panel Builder, you need expertise in electrical wiring, schematic reading, and a thorough understanding of UL508A standards, typically backed by relevant technical education or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools like multimeters, wire strippers, and CAD software, as well as knowledge of industry certifications such as OSHA safety training, is important. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient assembly of industrial control panels critical to various automated systems.

What are some common challenges faced by UL 508A Panel Builders and how can they be addressed?

UL 508A Panel Builders often face challenges such as interpreting complex electrical schematics, ensuring compliance with strict safety standards, and managing tight project deadlines. Staying up-to-date with the latest UL 508A standards and thorough documentation helps maintain compliance and quality. Strong collaboration with design engineers, electricians, and quality assurance teams is essential for troubleshooting design or wiring issues and ensuring efficient project delivery. Adopting effective project management and regular training can further minimize errors and streamline the panel building process.

What is the difference between Ul508A Panel vs Electrician?

AspectUl508A PanelElectrician

Job FocusDesign, building, and testing control panelsInstalling, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems

While both Ul508A Panel builders and electricians work with electrical systems, Ul508A Panel professionals focus on designing and assembling control panels compliant with UL standards, often in manufacturing environments. Electricians handle a broader range of electrical installations and repairs across various settings. Understanding these differences helps clarify the specific skills and certifications required for each role.

What is a UL508A panel?

A UL508A panel is an industrial control panel that has been designed, built, and labeled according to the UL508A standard set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This standard ensures that the panel meets safety, wiring, and construction requirements for controlling electrical equipment in industrial environments. UL508A certification indicates that the panel has been inspected and approved by UL, providing assurance of quality and safety for manufacturers and end users. These panels are commonly used in automation systems, machinery, and process control applications. Choosing a UL508A certified panel can help with code compliance and reduce liability risks.

Job description

Blentech Corporation is a world-class manufacturer of custom food processing systems. We specialize in engineering solutions that integrate heat transfer, material handling, and sophisticated automation. We are seeking a skilled Control Panel Builder Technician I to join our team in Columbus, IN. In this role, you will be responsible for the physical assembly and wiring of the industrial control panels that power our custom food processing technology.
Core Function
The Control Panel Builder is responsible for the precision assembly, wiring, and testing of industrial control panels. You will translate engineering schematics into high-quality, physical hardware, ensuring every component-from PLCs to terminal blocks-is installed according to UL508A standards and Blentech's rigorous quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Panel Assembly: Layout and mount components (PLCs, VFDs, power supplies, relays, and circuit breakers) onto backplates according to engineering drawings.
  • Wiring & Terminating: Perform point-to-point wiring using various wire gauges. This includes neat routing through wire duct, crimping terminals, and ensuring all connections are secure and labeled correctly.
  • Enclosure Fabrication: Drill, tap, and cut holes in stainless steel or painted steel enclosures for HMIs, pushbuttons, and conduit entries.
  • Schematic Interpretation: Read and accurately follow electrical schematics and bill of materials (BOMs).
  • QA/QC Testing: Conduct continuity tests and power-up checks to ensure panels are wired correctly before they are integrated into the final machine.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Control Systems Technicians and Engineers to redline drawings and suggest improvements for manufacturing efficiency.

Qualifications
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in industrial electrical assembly or control panel building.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and industrial symbols.
    • Proficiency with hand and power tools (drills, taps, wire strippers, crimpers, and knock-out sets).
    • Familiarity with UL508A and NEC standards is highly preferred.
  • Attention to Detail: High standards for wire routing, labeling, and overall panel aesthetics.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; technical certification in Electrical Technology or Mechatronics is a plus.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Work Setting: This is a hands-on position based in our Columbus workshop/manufacturing floor.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stand for long periods, work with small components, and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Visual Acuity: Must be able to distinguish colors for wiring and read fine print on labels and schematics.

Requirements and Desired Skills:
  • 3+ years of experience as a Control Panel Technician or similar role.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Forklift experience is preferred, but we are willing to provide training and certification for the right candidate.
