What is the difference between Typeface vs Graphic Designer?

AspectTypefaceGraphic Designer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of typography, font design, and sometimes basic graphic design skillsDesign degree or certification, proficiency in design software, understanding of visual communication
Work EnvironmentType foundries, design studios, publishing houses, or freelanceAdvertising agencies, marketing firms, in-house corporate teams, or freelance
Industry UsageFocuses on creating and designing fonts and typefacesCreates visual content including logos, layouts, and branding materials

While a Typeface specializes in designing fonts and typefaces, a Graphic Designer creates a wide range of visual content. Both roles require a strong understanding of design principles, but their focus areas differ significantly within the creative industry.

What are typeface designers?

Typeface designers, also known as type designers or font designers, are professionals who create and design typefaces—the sets of characters that make up fonts used in digital and print media. They blend artistic creativity with technical skills to develop new letterforms, symbols, and styles that are functional, visually appealing, and readable. Typeface designers often work for foundries, design agencies, or as independent freelancers, and their work is crucial in branding, publishing, and user interface design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Typeface Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Typeface Designer, you need strong skills in typography, graphic design, and a solid understanding of type history and anatomy, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency with vector-based design software such as Adobe Illustrator, FontLab, or Glyphs is essential, and knowledge of font development standards is highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional typeface designers apart. These abilities ensure the creation of functional, aesthetically pleasing typefaces that meet diverse client and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Typeface Designers when working on custom font projects for clients?

Typeface Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with client requirements, ensuring readability across different platforms, and meeting tight deadlines. Additionally, they must collaborate closely with graphic designers, branding teams, and developers to make sure the final font integrates seamlessly into various media. Managing technical aspects, like hinting for screen optimization and supporting multiple languages, also requires a strong attention to detail and adaptability.

Job description

What You'll Do:

We're looking for a Staff Product Designer who designs with AI the same way we build with it. You'll own complex product areas end-to-end, ship world-class experiences, and build things independently when the moment calls for it. This is not a role for someone curious about AI. It's for someone who's already living and working in it.
How You'll Make an Impact:

  • Own end-to-end design across multiple product areas - from zero to shipped
  • Use AI tools daily to move faster, prototype smarter, and go further than traditional workflows allow
  • Build independently when needed - prototypes, working flows, even production-ready work
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, and data to make decisions quickly and ship with conviction
  • Raise the bar on craft - not just what looks good, but what actually works for customers
  • Mentor other designers and help the team level up in an AI-native way of working

What You Bring:

  • 10+ years of product design experience with a strong portfolio
  • You use AI tools in your actual workflow - not as a demo, but as a daily driver
  • Bonus if you vibe-code, prototype in code, or have shipped something you built yourself
  • Strong instincts for what makes a product feel right, not just look right
  • Experience in a fast-moving environment where the roadmap changes and you adapt
  • Figma fluency is a given; what matters more is what you do beyond it
  • Bonus: B2B/SaaS product experience
  • Bonus: HTML/CSS or front-end chops
  • Bonus: Experience designing AI products or workflows

Location
This is a hybrid role based in our Palo Alto HQ. We collaborate in-office 3 days a week.

Base Salary
The range for this role is $175K - $200K. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process.
