What is twin screw extrusion?

Twin screw extrusion is a manufacturing process that uses two intermeshing screws to mix, convey, and shape materials, typically polymers or food products. The screws rotate inside a barrel, allowing for efficient mixing, heating, and shearing of the material. This method is widely used for compounding plastics, producing food items like pasta or snacks, and processing pharmaceuticals because it offers excellent control over material properties and consistency. Twin screw extruders can handle a wide range of formulations and are highly customizable for different applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a twin screw extrusion operator?

To thrive as a Twin Screw Extrusion Operator, you need a solid understanding of polymer processing, machine operation, and quality control, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with extrusion machinery, control panels, and quality assurance systems like SPC is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for managing production and resolving issues. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality manufacturing of plastic products in industrial settings.

What are some common challenges faced by operators in twin screw extrusion roles, and how can they be addressed?

Operators in twin screw extrusion roles often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, managing material feed rates, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Variations in raw material properties or process parameters can lead to fluctuations in output, requiring close monitoring and quick adjustments. Effective communication with quality control and maintenance teams is essential to promptly resolve any issues and minimize downtime. Continuous training and familiarity with the latest control systems also help operators stay efficient and ensure optimal performance.

Build Your Career with a Growing Advanced Manufacturing Company

XPM Plastics Compounding LLC is a growing plastics compounding and advanced manufacturing company focused on delivering high-performance thermoplastic material solutions to manufacturers across a variety of industries.
As we expand our operations and invest in new equipment, technology, and manufacturing capabilities, we're looking for an experienced Industrial Electrical Maintenance Technician to join our team and play an important role in keeping our production operation running safely, reliably, and efficiently.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on maintenance professional who enjoys troubleshooting complex equipment, solving problems, and working in a growing manufacturing environment where your experience and ideas can make a difference.
The Opportunity

As an Industrial Electrical Maintenance Technician, you will support our manufacturing crew by troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and industrial control systems throughout our manufacturing facility.
You'll work with sophisticated twin-screw extrusion and material-handling equipment, facility systems, electrical distribution, PLCs, drives, and other industrial equipment. You'll also play an important role in developing and maintaining our preventive maintenance program as our operation continues to grow.
What You'll Do

  • Troubleshoot and repair twin-screw extruders, material handling systems, feeders, dryers, blenders, and other manufacturing equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and industrial control systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLC and industrial PC control systems, including Allen-Bradley and Siemens controllers.
  • Modify and make improvements to Allen-Bradley and Siemens control systems as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair AC and DC drives and related electrical systems.
  • Locate and repair faults in facility power distribution and other electrical systems.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on manufacturing equipment, utilities, and building systems.
  • Help identify recurring equipment issues and recommend improvements to increase reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Support equipment installations, upgrades, and modifications as XPM continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities.
  • Work closely with production personnel to quickly diagnose and resolve equipment problems.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare purchase orders for required parts, materials, and supplies.
  • Provide direction and technical assistance to other maintenance personnel or tradesmen when needed.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency maintenance response.
  • Work overtime when necessary to support production requirements.
  • Perform all work in accordance with company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is experienced, mechanically and electrically inclined, resourceful, and comfortable working independently.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Journeyman Electrician status preferred.
  • Associate degree in Electrical/Mechanical Technology or completion of a state-approved apprenticeship preferred.
  • 6–8 years of industrial maintenance experience preferred.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting industrial electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control systems.
  • Experience with industrial control systems.
  • Experience with AC/DC drives and industrial automation.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and applicable state and local codes.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance issues in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and safety-conscious.
  • Willingness to learn new equipment, technologies, and processes.
  • Valid driver's license and required professional licenses/certifications.
  • Must provide and maintain your own professional tools and tool storage.
Why Join XPM?

Growing Company. Real Opportunity.

XPM is investing in the future of its manufacturing operation, including new equipment, advanced extrusion technology, laboratory capabilities, and expanded production capacity. This position provides an opportunity to be part of that growth rather than simply maintaining an established operation.
