Job description

JOB SUMMARY:
Works under supervision of the Director. Provides engineering support for the Energy Department, including Electric and Gas Divisions.
Examples of work performed: provides direction to the Engineering Division to ensure compliance with TVPPA, NESC, and ANSI codes; performs and approves engineering calculations relating to line design and operation; assists in system planning and develops equipment specifications as required; provides system data on request; coordinates work performed by outside engineering firms on special projects; develops and recommends policies related to new service and line extension; recommends and coordinates system maintenance and renovation; investigates customer service complaints; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of an electric transmission and distribution system
Knowledge of the principles and practices of overhead and underground electric distribution line construction
Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering
Knowledge of the principles and practices of a natural gas distribution system
Knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions
Ability to train new and existing personnel in engineering principles
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to install, operate, and maintain engineering software programs on a computer
Ability to apply TVPPA, NESC, and ANSI codes to Energy Department
Ability to administer emergency first aid and CPR
Ability to work a flexible schedule due to system emergencies and scheduled system shutdowns
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering plus four to six years of electric distribution engineering experience; or a combination of education and experience. A valid Tennessee driver's license is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical:
The essential functions of this position are primarily sedentary in nature within an office environment. They include operating a computer and related peripherals and moving about in an office to access cabinets, drawers, etc. and occasionally moving objects that weigh up to ten pounds. Other essential functions include driving a motor vehicle to worksites, navigating uneven terrain. Attendance is an essential function of this position as is the ability to work a flexible schedule.

Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
