Position Summary:
The Director of Premium Connections Design and Development leads U. S. Steel's premium connection engineering function, overseeing the design, development, and validation of premium threaded connections for the oil and gas industry. This role manages a multidisciplinary team, directs the premium connection testing program, and serves as a key technical representative for the company in industry forums such as API. The Director partners closely with Commercial, Technical Sales, and Manufacturing teams to align product design with market trends, business strategy, customer requirements, and industry standards.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute strategic plans for the Premium Connections group, ensuring alignment with market needs, business objectives, and commercial strategy.
  • Implement a go-to-market strategy for new products and services.
  • Supervise product engineering team to launch and sustain premium connections globally.
  • Provide strong leadership to managers, engineers, designers, and technical specialists, promoting a safe, high performance work environment.
  • Oversee the design, analysis, testing, and qualification of premium threaded connections, ensuring compliance with API and internal standards.
  • Establish and maintain quality assurance practices, technical procedures, and engineering controls within the Premium Connections organization.
  • Prioritize and manage capital plans for thread development initiatives supporting long term growth and technical competitiveness.
  • Guide manufacturing facilities on premium connection threading, machining, and production best practices.
  • Represent U. S. Steel on technical committees, including API, and serve as a key technical contact for customers, suppliers, and industry experts.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and technical staff to build organizational capability and ensure a strong pipeline of expertise.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in premium connections development, including at least 10 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Functional knowledge of FEA, including interpretation, design recommendations, and clear communication of results to nontechnical audiences.
  • Knowledge of CNC programming and machining processes for lathes and machining centers.
  • Strong understanding of API technical standards, quality management systems, and technical certification requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse technical teams and drive cohesive, results focused collaboration.
  • In depth knowledge of customer standards and the application of tubular products in oil and gas operations.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface effectively across all organizational levels and with external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing/plant environments.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Engineering
  • PE registration in the State of Texas
  • A good standing member in API/SPE
  • Experience in managing IP Portfolio
