Position Summary:
The Senior Research Manager provides advanced technical expertise and leadership supporting the development, evaluation, manufacture and application of premium threaded products for U. S. Steel Tubular Products. This role collaborates closely with design engineering, operations, contractors, and cross functional teams to guide product development, ensure manufacturability, review design requirements, and support the activities of the end user. The Manager establishes detailed research plan, scope of work, schedules, and cost plans to ensure timely, accurate, and cost-effective product launch. Will act as a single point of contact for all R&D activities carried out at U.S. Steel Tubular Products. Work Closely with IP Counsel to manage the IP portfolio.
Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with design engineering, operations, staff, and contracted services to support cost effective development and manufacture of premium products.
  • Support product development with in-depth analysis using advanced tools such as FEA and other simulation techniques.
  • Assist the commercial team in the use of tubulars and connections in the construction of customer wells.
  • Establish comprehensive project scopes, schedules, work plans, and cost estimates for new connection designs prior to release.
  • Review threaded connection designs, evaluate manufacturing variances, and assist with threading machine programming and troubleshooting.
  • Assist in creating legal and technical documents outlining work requirements, costs, and contractual commitments related to product engineering.
  • Lead review meetings with design, manufacturing, and operations teams to verify scope of accuracy and completion.
  • Continuously monitor product engineering project status to ensure timely and cost-effective execution.
  • Identify deficiencies in product engineering activities and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work closely with the legal and engineering teams to sustain and enhance IP portfolio.
  • Provide timely analysis of field issues and support claims resolution.

Requirements:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline preferred; candidates with substantial OCTG industry experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; knowledge of the Oil Country Tubular Goods market is a plus.
  • Strong customer interface skills with experience working across engineering, manufacturing, and contractor teams.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks and 3D modeling; familiarity with FEA principles is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to read, interpret, and apply technical specifications.
  • Strong computer skills and professional writing ability.
  • Experience with design and simulation tools such as solid works, abaqus, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Engineering
  • PE registration in the State of Texas
  • A good standing member in API/SPE
  • Experience in managing IP Portfolio
