What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Trust Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trust Associate, you need a solid understanding of trust administration, financial principles, and relevant legal regulations, often supported by a degree in finance, business, or law. Familiarity with fiduciary accounting software, trust management platforms, and knowledge of industry certifications such as CTFA are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, discretion, and effective communication skills help build client trust and ensure accurate management of sensitive information. These competencies are crucial for safeguarding client assets, maintaining compliance, and delivering high-quality service in trust administration.

What are Trust Associates?

Trust Associates are professionals who assist in the administration and management of trusts, estates, and fiduciary accounts. They typically work at banks, trust companies, or law firms, supporting trust officers in tasks such as opening accounts, maintaining records, processing transactions, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Trust Associates also communicate with clients, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders, helping to coordinate the distribution of assets and resolve related inquiries. Their work is essential in ensuring that trusts are managed efficiently and according to the wishes of the grantor.

What are some typical challenges a Trust Associate may face in managing client accounts?

A Trust Associate often manages multiple client accounts simultaneously, which can present challenges in balancing attention to detail with timely execution of tasks. Common hurdles include navigating complex legal and regulatory requirements, coordinating with internal teams such as legal, tax, and investment professionals, and responding promptly to client inquiries. Staying organized and maintaining clear communication are crucial for ensuring fiduciary responsibilities are met and for building strong client relationships. Over time, these challenges help Trust Associates develop a comprehensive understanding of wealth management and estate planning.

Job Summary:

The Trust Officer is a fiduciary and senior relationship manager responsible for the comprehensive administration of trust, estate, and wealth management relationships, primarily serving high-net-worth individuals and families. This role requires advanced knowledge of trust law, estate settlement, investments, and taxation, as well as a strong understanding of the Quad Cities market and its unique business, family, and community dynamics. The Trust Officer serves as a trusted advisor to clients and beneficiaries, ensures compliance with governing documents and regulatory requirements, and contributes to the growth of the Trust and Wealth Management division through relationship expansion and new business development. The title and compensation level will be determined based on experience, credentials, and expertise.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Trust & Wealth Administration

  • Serve as fiduciary officer for a portfolio of complex trust, estate, and agency accounts, including multigenerational and high-net-worth relationships, ensuring administration in accordance with governing documents, fiduciary standards, and applicable laws.
  • Administer complex estates and trusts where the bank serves as executor,  administrator, or trustee, including asset management, fiduciary accountings, coordination and filing of required tax returns, distributions, and estate closings.
  • Evaluate discretionary distribution requests and provide fiduciary guidance that balances beneficiary needs, trust objectives, tax considerations, and long-term wealth preservation.
  • Partner with investment officers and advisors to ensure assets are prudently managed while identifying and mitigating fiduciary, operational, and regulatory risk.

Business Development & Relationship Management

  • Leverage trust, wealth, and regional market expertise to develop new fiduciary and investment relationships, primarily within the Quad Cities area, but also in our Stateline Market (Roscoe, IL and Beloit, WI).
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to high-net-worth clients, beneficiaries, attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors, delivering tailored trust and wealth solutions.
  • Collaborate with internal bank partners to provide integrated client solutions and generate cross-referrals.
  • Build and maintain strong referral networks with Quad Cities-based centers of influence and meet business development objectives established by the Senior Trust Officer.

Community Engagement & Professional Presence

  • Represent CBI Bank & Trust within the Quad Cities community by supporting initiatives that address the fiduciary, financial planning, and legacy needs of individuals and families.
  • Maintain active participation in nonprofit, professional, or civic organizations, preferably in leadership roles.
  • Participate in client, community, and educational events to enhance visibility and strengthen client and referral relationships.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for trust and wealth management at community or professional engagements as requested.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; BS/BA preferred
  • CFTA or equivalent trust and wealth designation required
  • CPA with fiduciary and individual tax experience
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Trust Officer or in a comparable investment or wealth management role.
  • Demonstrated experience working with high-net-worth individuals and families
  • Advanced knowledge of trust and estate administration, fiduciary taxation, and investment principles
  • Strong familiarity with the Quad Cities market and local professional networks
  • Proven ability to build long-term client and referral relationships

Employee Benefits:

In addition to competitive pay, we offer Paid Time Off, 401(k), an Employee Assistance Program, and on the job training opportunities. Full-time and part-time associates are offered a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision and more!
