Triso information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in the TRISO fuel industry, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Professionals in the TRISO (tristructural isotropic) fuel industry often encounter challenges related to the highly technical nature of nuclear materials handling, strict regulatory compliance, and the need for meticulous attention to safety protocols. Job seekers can prepare by gaining a strong foundation in nuclear engineering principles, staying updated on regulatory standards, and developing robust problem-solving skills. Additionally, teamwork and clear communication are crucial, as you will regularly collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, safety specialists, and regulatory authorities.

What is the difference between Triso vs Radiologic Technologist?

AspectTrisoRadiologic Technologist
Required CredentialsCertification in Triso procedures, relevant healthcare certificationsARRT certification, state licensure
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, specialized imaging centersHospitals, outpatient imaging centers, clinics
Industry UsageMedical imaging, diagnostic proceduresMedical imaging, diagnostic radiography
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

While Triso specialists focus on specific imaging procedures involving Triso technology, Radiologic Technologists perform a broader range of diagnostic imaging tasks using various radiographic equipment. Both roles require certification and work in similar healthcare environments, but Triso is more specialized within the imaging field.

What are TRISO fuel particles?

TRISO stands for 'tristructural-isotropic' fuel particles, which are a type of nuclear fuel used primarily in advanced high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. Each TRISO particle consists of a uranium, plutonium, or thorium fuel kernel surrounded by multiple layers of ceramic and carbon-based materials. These layers provide containment for radioactive fission products, making TRISO fuel highly robust and resistant to meltdown. TRISO fuel is considered safer and more efficient than traditional nuclear fuels due to its structural integrity under extreme conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TRISO Fuel Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a TRISO Fuel Engineer, you need a strong background in nuclear engineering, materials science, and chemical engineering, typically supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with nuclear reactor modeling software, materials characterization tools, and knowledge of fuel fabrication processes and regulatory standards is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies are vital to ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative development of TRISO fuel for advanced nuclear reactors.

Position Overview

AMPERA is seeking an experienced TRISO Process Development Scientist to lead the research, design, and optimization of advanced TRISO fuel particle fabrication for AMPERAs compact micro-reactors. This role will focus on developing innovative fuel manufacturing processes, from kernel synthesis and coating deposition to final encapsulation and quality assurance.
The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in nuclear fuel processing, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and high-temperature materials, along with experience translating laboratory-scale methods into scalable production processes compatible with additive manufacturing integration (Liquid Metal Jetting - LMJ).
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D for the synthesis and coating of TRISO fuel particles (Th, UCO, UO, or other kernels).
  • Develop and optimize CVD processes for PyC and SiC coatings, ensuring microstructural uniformity and mechanical integrity.
  • Collaborate with materials and additive manufacturing teams to integrate TRISO particle fabrication with LMJ-based fuel element production.
  • Conduct thermochemical and mechanical characterization of coated particles and compacts.
  • Establish process control, metrology, and quality assurance protocols for reproducible fuel fabrication.
  • Design and execute experimental campaigns for irradiation testing and post-irradiation examination (PIE).
  • Support safety, licensing, and regulatory documentation aligned with NRC and DOE standards.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (thermal, neutronics, materials, and manufacturing) to provide validated fuel data and feedback to reactor design efforts.
  • Mentor junior scientists and engineers in fuel process development and nuclear materials research.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in nuclear fuel R&D, TRISO fuel development, or advanced ceramic coatings.
  • Hands-on experience with CVD systems, high-temperature furnaces, and particle synthesis techniques.
  • Familiarity with fuel qualification standards (DOE, NRC) and irradiation testing programs.
  • Experience scaling laboratory processes into pilot or industrial production.
  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing integration or powder metallurgy is a plus.
  • Excellent documentation, analytical, and leadership skills.
  • U.S. citizenship or eligibility for security clearance may be required.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive benefits package including healthcare, dental, vision, STD, LTD, Life/AD&D and 401(k).
  • Opportunity to pioneer advanced nuclear fuel technologies driving the next generation of clean energy.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven environment that fosters technical excellence and innovation.
  • Career advancement potential as AMPERA expands its fuel development and reactor manufacturing programs.
